Pope: sex abuse 'scourge' for all society (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI insisted on Saturday that all of society's institutions and not just the Catholic church must be held to "exacting" standards in their response to sex abuse of children, and defended the church's efforts to confront the problem.

Benedict acknowledged in remarks to visiting U.S. bishops during an audience at the Vatican that pedophilia was a "scourge" for society, and that decades of scandals over clergy abusing children had left Catholics in the United States bewildered.

"It is my hope that the Church's conscientious efforts to confront this reality will help the broader community to recognize the causes, true extent and devastating consequences of sexual abuse, and to respond effectively to this scourge which affects every level of society," he said.

"By the same token, just as the church is rightly held to exacting standards in this regard, all other institutions, without exception, should be held to the same standards," the pope said.

An official of a U.S. group advocating for victims of clergy abuse lamented that Benedict, with his remarks, was setting a "terrible example" for bishops.

"No public figure talks more about child safety but does little to actually make children safer than Pope Benedict," David Clohessy, national director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, told The Associated Press in an emailed statement.

"The pope would have us believe that this crisis is about sex abuse. It isn't. It is about covering up sex abuse," Clohessy said. "And while child sex crimes happen in every institution, in no institution are they ignored or concealed as consistently as in the Catholic church."

The pedophile scandal has exploded in recent decades in the United States, but similar clergy sex abuse revelations have tainted the church in many other countries, including Mexico, Ireland, and several other European nations, including Italy.

But the most high-profile sex abuse case in the United States at the moment doesn't involve the church. Penn State university's former defensive football coordinator Jerry Sandusky has been charged with sexually abusing eight boys, and the fallout has led to the firing of longtime coach Joe Paterno and the departure of university president Graham Spanier.

College football in the U.S. is highly popular. The scandal has shaken the reputation of a college program that long had prided itself on integrity.

An advocacy group for those who have been sexually abused cited the Penn State scandal in its scathing criticism of the pope.

"It takes hubris for Pope Benedict to tell his bishops that the Catholic Church has led in the fight against sexual abuse of children," said Kristine Ward, chair of the National Survivor Advocates Coalition. "Issuing self-satisfied pats on the back while children remain in danger only further diminishes the church's credibility and deepens the laryngitis in its moral voice."

"The church to this day, while waving a moral flag, hasn't even come close to the Penn State Board of Trustees response ? no bishop has been fired," Ward said in a statement.

Benedict didn't address accusations by many victims and their advocates that church leaders, including at the office in the Vatican that Benedict headed before becoming pontiff, systematically tried to cover up the scandals, and that they have rarely been held accountable for that.

Investigations, often by civil authorities, revealed that church hierarchy frequently transferred pedophile priests from one parish to another.

Benedict told the bishops that his papal pilgrimage to the United States in 2008 "was intended to encourage the Catholics of America in the wake of the scandal and disorientation caused by the sexual abuse crisis of recent decades."

Echoing sentiment he has expressed in occasional meetings with victims of the abuse on trips abroad, Benedict added: "I wish to acknowledge personally the suffering inflicted on the victims and the honest efforts made to ensure both the safety of our children and to deal appropriately and transparently with allegations as they arise."

Benedict seemed to be reflecting some churchmen's contentions that the church has wrongly been singled out as villains for the abuse, a view that angered victims' advocates.

"The pope is again setting a terrible example for the world's bishops, echoing the claim by some of them that the church hierarchy is somehow being picked on by the public, the press and their parishioners," Clohessy said .

Despite criticism over U.S. bishops' handling of the abuse scandals, Benedict exhorted the churchmen to be moral compasses for U.S. society. The bishops, in Rome for consultations with the pope that are scheduled every five years, were urged to speak out "humbly yet insistently in defense of moral truth."

Benedict lamented what he called efforts to stop the church from speaking out publicly.

Earlier this month, U.S. Roman Catholic bishops vowed to defend their religious liberty in the face of growing acceptance of gay marriage and what they called attempts by secularists to marginalize faith.

In Illinois, for example, government officials ceased working with Catholic charities on adoptions and foster-care placement because the religious agencies refuse to recognize a new civil union law. Illinois bishops are suing the state.

Bishops have also pressed federal officials for broader religious exception to U.S. President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, which mandates that private insurers to pay for contraception.

"Despite attempts to still the church's voice in the public square, many people of good will continue to look to her for wisdom, insight and sound guidance in this far-reaching crisis," Benedict said, citing what he called a "growing sense of dislocation and insecurity" in the face of economic woes.

But he acknowledged that some of the bishops' own flock are turning away from the church, which he blamed on effects of a "secularized culture." Many U.S. Catholics shun Sunday Mass attendance or disregard such Vatican positions against contraception and divorce.

Crowds hit stores for "Black Friday" deals (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Retailers may not reap hefty gains from the longer lines of shoppers snaked around malls across the U.S. at the traditional post-Thanksgiving start of the holiday shopping season; broader bargain hunting driven by budgetary fears may depress overall holiday spending.

Eager shoppers hunted for bargains on big-screen televisions, video games and toys while fretting about their own shaky economic well-being, suggesting they may pull out their wallets for bargains but not for much else.

Some stores pushed their openings and specials up to Thanksgiving night, hoping to get a jump-start on the busiest day of their year.

The chains are trying to win big on "Black Friday," the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.

Shoppers trending younger: http://link.reuters.com/tag35s

While Black Friday has been the busiest day for years in terms of traffic at stores, it does not always mean that sales will soar for the season. Despite brisk sales right after Thanksgiving, total holiday season sales fell in both 2008 and 2009 when the recession took its hold on America's wallets.

The National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, expects 152 million people to hit stores this weekend, up 10.1 percent from last year. Yet it only expects sales for the full November-December holiday season to rise 2.8 percent, after climbing 5.2 percent in 2010.

Luxury chains, such as Saks Inc, and those catering to lower-income shoppers, such as dollar stores, are seen as the big winners this season, while mid-market retailers are expected to have a tough time winning over shoppers without the cache of the high-end set or the deep discounts others offer.

Opening early appeared to work, judging from the long lines at stores such as Toys R Us, Best Buy, Walmart and Target.

Even after a Toys R Us in New Jersey had been open for nearly an hour, at 9:50 p.m. EST on Thursday night, there was still a line of about 300 people waiting to get inside.

"It was like 'Club Toys R Us' -- one cart out, one cart in," said Charlie O'Shea, a senior retail analyst at Moody's.

After a woman walked out of the store with a large Little Tikes toy in her cart, the man waiting for her outside gave her a high-five, O'Shea said.

"People are looking for the big ticket item which is where they're going to get the most bang for their buck," said O'Shea, who also saw "a smattering of carts" with small goods.

Retail executives and analysts are predicting a more competitive season than 2010. U.S. unemployment still remains at 9 percent, European debt woes are weighing on the stock market and consumer confidence remains spotty.

This year there appeared to be some rough going, with reports of a shopper at a Los Angeles-area Walmart spraying pepper spray at a throng of shoppers to keep them away from the items she wanted. In 2008, a security officer working at a Walmart on Black Friday was trampled to death by a crowd.

EARLY START

Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Old Navy, which is part of Gap Inc, and Kmart, owned by Sears Holdings, were among the few retailers open on Thanksgiving.

Walmart began offering Black Friday deals at 10 p.m. on Thursday, while Target Corp, electronics chain Best Buy and department store chains Macy's Inc and Kohl's Corp opened at midnight - their earliest starts ever.

Other retailers, including J.C. Penney Co Inc, opened early Friday morning as they did last year.

Nelson Sepulveda, a building superintendent from Manhattan, was the first person in line at the Best Buy in Union Square, having queued up at 8 p.m. on Wednesday -- 28 hours before the store opened -- to get the $200 Sharp 42-inch LCD television, Play Station 3 games and other items he wanted.

This year, the heavy push got an even earlier start, as retailers such as Walmart and Toys R Us started offering holiday layaway programs as early as October.

Retailers from Amazon.com to Walmart were also offering online deals as Thanksgiving has become one of the biggest online shopping days of the year.

Some shoppers said that they feel as if the economy is back in a recession, leading them to change their shopping habits.

"Because of the recession, we are not going to shop as much," said Desiree Schoolfield, 49, a public service professional from Queens, who was shopping at the Toys R Us in Times Square.

About 1,000 people were waiting in line at the opening of the Target in Farmingdale, New York.

Those midnight openings drew online petition protests from store workers, and some shoppers also did not like the early openings.

Dwayne Dickson, a 19-year-old college student who works part time at Target, decided to stand in line to try to snag some small items, such as jewelry and clothing, before his Black Friday shift began.

"I will probably accidentally spend more this year on the holidays than I did last year," said Dickson, who, as a Target employee, gets an extra 10 percent discount.

For some shoppers, staying up late beat waking up for a 4 a.m. or 5 a.m. opening.

"Nobody really has to be out so early to come into the store. I really feel like that's better," Tosha Smith, a 21-year-old hotel attendant from Queens, said while shopping at Macy's.

At Macy's in Herald Square, four Occupy Wall Street activists chanted "boycott Macy's" and "stop supporting big corporations" even as about 9,000 people lined up to shop at the store.

The knock-down-drag-out fight comes as the rebound in sales cooled in October, when many top chains like Macy's and Saks reported disappointing sales.

It will be even tougher for chains that have struggled with sales declines lately, like Gap and J.C. Penney.

Euro "Stability Union" could be achieved fast: Schaeuble (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Euro zone countries could create a Stability Union to secure deeper fiscal integration relatively quickly, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Sunday.

"One can do that quickly," he told ARD television, referring to changes to the Lisbon Treaty that Germany has wanted to allow much tighter budget controls in the 17 euro zone countries.

"The goal is for the member states of the common currency to create their own Stability Union and to concentrate on that," Schaeuble said.

In Brussels earlier on Sunday, EU officials said Germany and France are exploring radical methods of securing deeper and more rapid fiscal integration among euro zone countries, aware that getting broad backing for the necessary treaty changes may not be possible.

Germany's original plan was to secure agreement among all 27 EU countries for a limited change to the Lisbon Treaty by the end of 2012, a way of shoring up the region's defences against the debt crisis.

But in meetings with EU leaders in recent weeks, it has become clear to both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy that it may not be possible to get all 27 countries on board, EU sources say.

Even if that were possible, it could take a year or more to secure the changes while market attacks on Italy, Spain and now France suggest bold measures are needed within weeks.

As a result, senior French and German civil servants have been exploring other ways of achieving the goal, either via an agreement among just the euro zone countries, or a separate agreement outside the EU treaty that could involve a core of around 8-10 euro zone countries, officials say.

Schaeuble said a Stability Union could be a decisive step to winning more confidence from the markets.

"The important signal, to convince financial investors in the world, is and remains a stable currency," Schaeuble said. That means that every euro zone member has to do its homework on its budget discipline.

"We want to ensure that through treaty changes," he said.

Mice with fewer insulin-signaling receptors don't live longer

Thursday, November 24, 2011

Scientists studying longevity thought it might be good to lack a copy of a gene, called IGF1 receptor, that is important in insulin signaling. Previous studies showed invertebrates that lacked the copy lived longer, even if their bodies were less responsive to insulin, the hormone that lowers blood sugar.

A new study from The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio challenges this. Knocking out one copy of the gene failed to increase the life span of male mice, and it only modestly increased the life span of female littermates.

Martin Adamo, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry, and Arlan Richardson, Ph.D., professor of cellular and structural biology, lead the laboratories that conducted the study. "Our data show insufficiency of this insulin-signaling gene does not produce a robust increase in life span as previously reported in invertebrates," Dr. Richardson said.

Dr. Adamo said: "This demonstrates that reducing insulin signaling through the IGF1 pathway in mammals does not play the same role in aging that is observed in invertebrates."

A receptor is a molecule on a cell's membrane that receives chemical signals. Knocking down the genetic instructions that make IGF1 receptors results in reduced insulin signaling.

###

The study is described Nov. 23 in the journalPLoS ONE.

Explosion hits Kenyan army truck; several wounded (AP)

NAIROBI, Kenya ? A Nairobi-based security official says an explosion has wounded several Kenyan soldiers.

The attack in the northern Kenyan town of Mandera is the sixth in a series of roadside bombs and grenade attacks following the entry of Kenyan troops into Somalia last month.

The official says that it was unclear how many soldiers were wounded in the blast.

A military aircraft was coming to take them to Nairobi, and security forces were combing the streets for suspects.

He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Kenya sent troops into Somalia to pursue members of the al-Qaida-linked insurgent group al-Shabab after a a string of kidnappings and attacks on Kenyan soil.

Egyptian troops replace police at Cairo flashpoint (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egyptian troops moved into streets around the Interior Ministry in Cairo on Wednesday, replacing riot police who had repeatedly clashed with protesters trying to reach the building, an army officer said. Riot police withdrew inside the ministry.

The removal of the widely hated police seemed to be part of efforts to calm violence that has killed more than 30 people and wounded 2,000 in Cairo and elsewhere in six days of protests targeting the ruling military council, not the army itself.

The Interior Ministry, near Tahrir Square, has been the main flashpoint for clashes in which police have fired tear gas, pellets and rubber bullets at stone-throwing demonstrators.

The protesters have derided an agreement forged on Tuesday by Egypt's ruling military council and mostly Islamist parties for a swifter transfer to civilian rule.

In another attempt to defuse tension, Sami Enan, the deputy head of the army council, said he was ready to meet youth activists driving the protests in Tahrir, state television said.

As dusk fell, thousands of people, many of them onlookers, had crowded into Tahrir, which was also the arena of protests which toppled President Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11.

Vendors were selling everything from snacks to face masks for protection against wafting tear gas.

Fatihia Abdul Ezz, a 60-year-old woman, said she had come to the square for the first time after seeing images of violence.

"They (the army rulers) were with Mubarak from the start," she said. "I came when I saw our sons being killed."

Protesters unfurled a huge sign denouncing army commander Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Enan and the council that has run Egypt since Mubarak's overthrow.

"Down, down with military rule. We the people are the red line. The people want to bring down the field marshal, Sami Enan and the military council," it read.

One man walked around the square holding aloft 10 spent tear gas shells, along with cartridge casings threaded on a string.

The overall death toll has reached 38 by a Reuters count after a man was killed in Alexandria and another died in what the state news agency MENA said was an attack on a police station in the northern town of Marsa Matrouh.

The Health Ministry said 32 people had been killed and 2,000 wounded in disturbances across the country of 80 million.

FASTER HANDOVER TO CIVILIAN RULE

Tantawi promised on Tuesday that a civilian president would be elected in June, about six months sooner than the army had planned.

"Leave, leave!" responded crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square. "The people want to topple the marshal."

The military had originally pledged to return to barracks within six months of Mubarak's removal. Its apparent reluctance to relinquish its power and privilege has fuelled frustration among Egyptians who feared their revolution had changed nothing.

Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defence minister for two decades, adjusted the schedule after generals met politicians, including leaders of the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood, which is eager to turn decades of grassroots endeavour into electoral success.

A parliamentary election, billed as Egypt's first free vote in decades, will start on Monday as planned, Tantawi confirmed.

Voting for the upper and lower houses will be completed only in March under a complex, staggered process. Parliament will then pick an assembly to draw up a new constitution, an exercise which the Brotherhood and its rivals are keen to influence.

France added its voice to those of U.N. and other rights groups in denouncing the military's handling of the protests.

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said his country "strongly condemns the excessive use of force against demonstrators" and called for elections to go ahead on time.

"In this critical period, we reiterate our support for a democratic transition in the country that in 2012 should transfer power back to elected civilian authorities," he said.

United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay called for an independent investigation into the bloodshed, saying the killing of protesters was inflaming the crisis.

"I urge the Egyptian authorities to end the clearly excessive use of force against protesters in Tahrir Square and elsewhere in the country, including the apparent improper use of tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition," Pillay said.

Instead of a peaceful environment for elections, she added, "we are seeing another outbreak of violence by the state against its increasingly and legitimately angry citizens".

REFERENDUM ON MILITARY RULE

Tantawi angered many youthful demonstrators by suggesting a referendum on whether military rule should end earlier, which they took as a ploy to undermine their cause by appealing to the many Egyptians who fear further upheaval.

"We have to wait and be patient with army rule. We shouldn't have a referendum, it's a waste of time," said Mohamed Rasheed, 62, a salesman in a Cairo jewellery shop, who pointed to discordant opinions among protesters in Tahrir.

"If we listen to them all, we are going to become like Lebanon," he said, evoking a nation notorious for conflict.

Many demonstrators are demanding that the military council immediately hand over all its powers to a civilian body.

"I am worried by the gulf of mistrust between the (army council) and the young people in Tahrir Square. The alternatives proposed from Tahrir do not seem practical," said Mustapha Kamal al-Sayyid, a political science professor at Cairo University.

Tantawi may calculate that most Egyptians, alarmed by turmoil that has hammered an already troubled economy, would prefer army rule to the uncertainties of a radical upheaval.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which helped organise a big protest on Friday but stayed out of subsequent demonstrations, seems willing to compromise with the military in the interest of securing a substantial voice in the new parliament.

Some other Islamist and liberal parties, as well as three out of more than 10 declared presidential candidates, also took part in Tuesday's crisis talks with the military council.

Tantawi has promised a national salvation government to replace Prime Minister Essam Sharaf's cabinet, which resigned this week, but remains in a caretaker role.

Political uncertainty has battered Egypt's finances. Foreign reserves have tumbled to $22 billion in October from $36 billion in December, just before the anti-Mubarak uprising erupted.

Egypt's currency dipped to its lowest level in almost seven years on Wednesday and the yield on an Egyptian dollar bond soared to its highest since March , suggesting that investors are unconvinced that stability will return soon.

Business Software Alliance speaks out against SOPA | Joystiq

The Business Software Alliance, a trade organization for the IT industry, has changed its tune regarding the controversial and terrible Stop Online Piracy Act. Though it issued a press release in October "commending" House Judiciary Committee chairman Lamar Smith for introducing the bill, BSA CEO Robert Holleyman wrote in a blog post this week that the BSA does not support the bill as it is.

SOPA will have to "balance key innovation, privacy and security considerations with the need to thwart the threat rogue websites pose" before the BSA, which counts Microsoft and Apple among its members, will officially endorse it.

Holleyman said that "definitions of who can be the subject of legal actions and what remedies are imposed must be tightened and narrowed. Due process, free speech, and privacy are rights cannot be compromised." Furthermore, "BSA has long stood against filtering or monitoring the Internet," which is a focus of SOPA.

It's nice to see some major software companies take the right stance with regards to widespread censorship -- at least through their trade organization.

Review: An ode to silents, the mute 'Artist' sings (AP)

NEW YORK ? The best validation for the nostalgia of "The Artist" is the film, itself.

A silent movie in tribute to silent movies, "The Artist" puts its money where its mouth is, so to speak. Or not to, rather.

Michel Hazanavicius' black-and-white, near-wordless film is a loving, irresistibly charming ode to a long-ago movie era that not only summons the dormant conventions of silent moviemaking, but makes them dance again.

The film opens with old-style titles and the first bursts of Ludovic Bource's spirited, nimble score, which (as in most silents) plays a starring role throughout. The camera pulls back on a man being electrocuted by captors.

"I won't talk," he says ? or so reads a title card. "I won't say a word."

It's the first of many puns, but it's also Hazanavicius' promise, too. To make a silent film nowadays, he's suggesting, is to subject oneself to torment. But the French filmmaker's boldness has already been much rewarded: The film was feted at the Cannes Film Festival, snapped up by Harvey Weinstein and is now considered a favorite horse in the Oscar race.

The opening scene is merely a fiction within "The Artist." The man is silent film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) ? a kind of Douglas Fairbanks, swashbuckling matinee idol ? and this is the premiere of his latest hit: "A Russian Affair." The year is 1927, and the packed auditorium greets the movie with a standing ovation and raucous cheers that we can only infer.

The grinning, mustachioed Valentin glides across the stage in a tuxedo, basking in the adulation. A born entertainer, he casually and eagerly keeps the audience in his thrall, pantomiming tricks with his faithful sidekick, on screen and off, his Jack Russell terrier.

The dog (Uggie) deserves credit here. Obviously raised on "The Awful Truth" and "The Thin Man," he puts shame to the digital Snowy of the upcoming "The Adventures of Tintin."

But the good times are soon to end: The Talkies are coming. When sound movies arrive, Valentin finds himself squeezed out of the business that so recently championed him. (The particular reason for Valentin's inadaptability is revealed later.)

Kinograph Studios head Al Zimmer (John Goodman, robbed of his booming voice but not of his character-filled face) is quickly transitioning to talkies and a new bevy of stars. Among them is Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), an upstart whose rise Valentin aided.

Valentin's fall is greased not just by irrelevancy but by the stock market crash and ego, (he self-finances an extravagant, belated silent film). Nearly destitute, he has little left besides his dog and his loyal chauffer (James Cromwell).

Miller, always quietly enamored with Valentin, ascends to stardom. Her "Beauty Spot," released on the same day as Valentin's "Tears of Love," draws lines around the block. That their paths will finally align is of little surprise in Hazanavicius' smart if predictable script.

Naturally, the image is the supreme element in a silent film (and a talkie, too, but that's another story). But "The Artist" is disappointing staid visually. Though it's remarkably true in style and production (design by Laurence Bennett), it doesn't bear the visual flare that perhaps it should.

Instead, "The Artist" is propelled by its performances, particularly Dujardin's. He has an exquisite elegance, and builds a whole movie with only his gestures. It's impossible to imagine "The Artist" without him, the wellspring of its charm.

But it doesn't take a masterpiece to remind us of the power of silent films. It most succeeds in this mission, an altogether welcome whisper of "Don't forget."

The most moving shots in "The Artist" are of audiences in the grip of a movie, whether silent or not. Hazanavicius captures moviegoers collectively on their edge of their seats, reacting in worry or laughter. It's this romance for the movies ? and the melancholy wistfulness for the silent era ? that makes "The Artist" affecting, urging us to remember the simple, captivating beauty of moving images in a theater.

"The Artist," a Weinstein Company release, is rated PG-13 for a disturbing image and a crude gesture. Running time: 100 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Mortgage insurance for a successful project | Mortgage Calculator

To realize its real estate project, you must obtain a mortgage and a loan insurance. The loan insurance will be put into play when a risk such as death, injury or illness occurs.

The credit institution may also require collateral such as a bond or mortgage and will be implemented if the loan is not repaid.

1. Why insure a mortgage?

The mortgage insurance protects the borrower and his family. Thus, in case of death, accident or illness, the insurance covers the total or partial repayment of the loan depending on the contract signed.

This insurance makes it possible to avoid financial difficulties that could lead to the sale of the property to repay the lender

2. When seeking a mortgage insurance?

To accomplish with confidence its real estate project, you need to plan the search for lassurance before signing the sales agreement and without waiting for the acceptance of the loan.

This allows the borrower to:
To compete more contracts by comparing the offers (guarantees, benefits, prices ?)
Save time if you must answer detailed questionnaires on the health and perform additional medical examinations
Know in advance if you are insured and under what conditions: level of coverage, exclusions, or specific standard rate.

3. What type of mortgage insurance purchase?

The loan insurance can cover various risks: death, disability, incapacity, loss of employment. Before purchasing, it should check with their advisor and read the information leaflet of the insurance contract to understand all the terms of insurance.

Life assurance covers not only the death but also disability cases extremely serious, called ?total and irreversible loss of autonomy? (TILA). In both cases, it pays to the borrower instead of the capital outstanding at the credit institution. It is essential to the security of spouse, co-borrowers, children or dependents.

Disability Insurance / incapacity for work supports the repayment deadlines if the result of an illness or accident, the borrower is unable to carry on business or any other paid activities a non-final or partial.

The extent of the guarantee and the concept of disability / incapacity for work included in the contract.

Insurance job loss is to support all or part repayment deadlines in case of unemployment. It comes into play under certain conditions and may cease when the insured reaches a certain age. The conditions for compensation are different depending on the contract.

Note: The death and disability insurance may be required by the credit institution where the demand for mortgage insurance when job loss is optional.

4. How can a mortgage?

If the mortgage is established on behalf of several persons (co-borrowers), the proportion of the sum insured for each must be specified. This concept is usually expressed as a percentage, ?is every man for all the capital (time x 100%). Thus, in case of death of one of the co-borrowers, the insurer will pay the entire outstanding principal, ?or for each part of the capital. For example, if everyone is insured up to 50% in case of death of one of them, the insurer will pay half of what remains due.

If the borrower takes with her husband, it is recommended to ensure each for the total loan amount (each 100%) or at least to ensure 100% one with the most revenue.

5. To insure that the mortgage?

It is possible to take out insurance to mortgage credit institutions, insurers and brokers.

The credit institution, which was filed with the loan application may offer a loan insurance (group insurance or individual).

The insurance group is a group insurance contract negotiated by the bank with an insurer for the benefit of its customers. Membership formalities are simple and if put into play the insurance, the management is facilitated.

It is possible to offer the bank a specific individual contract underwritten by an insurer of choice of the borrower. The insurer designates the credit institution as the beneficiary of capital guaranteed by issuing a ?delegation of insurance.? This document is signed and accepted by the credit institution, the insurer and the borrower agree to respect each other. The insurer agrees to pay the amount due to the credit institution, in case of death, for example, and to inform in case of non-payment by the borrower.

Do not hesitate to question its bank advisor for more information.

Note: If the insurance is chosen other than that proposed by the bank, it should present a level of coverage equivalent to that of the group contract.

Good to know: a standardized information sheet must be delivered consistently by all professionals since that is sought insurance for a mortgage. It presents the benefits offered and an example of personal cost of insurance, it is easier to compare offers. You can also file an application to different insurers.

6. What are the things to check in an insurance contract mortgage?

Regardless of the contract, it must be read carefully. You should check the extent of coverage offered and the terms of management of loan maturity in the event of work stoppage or exclusion of certain activities.

We must carefully check all assi exclusions whether general or personal following consideration of the case.

Egypt military, political parties in crisis talks (AP)

CAIRO ? Egyptian state television says the military rulers are in a crisis meeting with leaders of political parties across the spectrum and the head of the ruling military council will address the nation shortly.

The report Tuesday came as tens of thousands massed in Cairo's Tahrir Square to demand the military set a date for presidential elections soon to enable the quick transfer of power to a civilian government.

The military-appointed government of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf submitted its resignation on Monday in apparent response to some of the demands of protesters. The military has not yet said whether it accepted the resignation.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) ? Tens of thousands of Egyptians massed on Tahrir Square for a mass demonstration Tuesday while fresh clashes broke out elsewhere in Cairo as protests demanding the country's military rulers step down entered a fourth day.

Activists are hoping to increase the number of protesters in the square ? which was the epicenter of the revolt that ousted Hosni Mubarak in February ? with a demonstration to bolster popular support for a "second revolution" despite bloodshed that has left at least 29 people dead nationwide.

Security forces stayed away from the square since Monday to avoid confrontations after several failed efforts to clear the area in downtown Cairo turned violent. But clashes broke out in streets connecting Tahrir Square to police headquarters, with black-clad security forces backed by military troops firing volleys of tear gas and rubber bullets to block groups of angry young men, who responded by hurling stones and fire bombs.

The two sides have been engaged in intense clashes since the unrest began on Saturday with protesters trying to force out the generals who have failed to stabilize the country, salvage the economy or bring democracy more than nine months after taking the reins from Mubarak.

Three foreigners were arrested after they were seen throwing fire bombs at security forces from the roof of a building belonging to the American University near Tahrir Square, an Interior Ministry official said. The official did not give the nationalities of the three men.

An airport official also said a U.S. citizen who had been arrested while allegedly filming security forces at Tahrir Square was deported Tuesday to the United Arab Emirates from which he had arrived.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information

In many ways, the protests bear a striking resemblance to the 18-day uprising beginning Jan. 25 that toppled Mubarak. The chants are identical, except that military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi's name has replaced Mubarak's.

"The goal is to get rid of the government. They're still stealing and people can't eat," said protester Raed Said, 23, as he walked with an arm around his friend who was choking from the tear gas. "The field marshal has to leave because he's trying to protect Mubarak and doesn't want to try him, so he has to go."

Hundreds of protesters arrived early Tuesday to join several thousand who have been camping on Tahrir Square, sleeping in tents or on the grass rolled up in blankets despite efforts by police to clear the area. The crowds hoisted a giant Egyptian flag and chanted slogans demanding the generals immediately step down in favor of a presidential civilian council.

One man held a sign reading "ministry of thuggery" with photos of Mubarak, Tantawi, Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and others. A few hundred young men nearby chanted "say it, don't fear, the council must go" and "the people want to execute the field marshal."

The rally, dubbed "Egypt's Salvation," came a day after Sharaf's civilian Cabinet submitted its resignation to the military council, a move that had been widely expected given the government's perceived inefficiency and its almost complete subordination to the generals. The ruling military council gave no word if the offer had been accepted, but regardless, it failed to satisfy the protesters.

"That was a game, like playing the joker in a game of cards. We want the military council to resign," said 60-year-old protester Mustafa Mursi, who wore a pair of goggles on his forehead with a gas mask and a laminated picture of his slain son around his neck.

Mursi, who has been at the square since the latest protests began on Saturday, said that his son Mohammed was shot in head on Jan. 28 during clashes with security forces in the earlier uprising.

"I'll stay until military rule ends and there is civilian rule," he said.

The clashes came few days before the country's first parliamentary elections since Mubarak was forced to step down. Fears were high that the turmoil would disrupt elections due to begin on Nov. 28.

Amnesty International harshly criticized the military rulers in a new report, saying they have "completely failed to live up their promises to Egyptians to improve human rights."

The London-based group documented steps by the military that have fallen short of increasing human rights and in some cases have made matters worse than under Mubarak.

"The euphoria of the uprising has been replaced by fears that one repressive rule has simply been replaced with another," according to the report, issued early Tuesday.

The report called for repeal of the Mubarak-era "emergency laws," expanded to cover "thuggery" and criticizing the military. It said the army has placed arbitrary restrictions on media and other outlets.

Egyptian security forces have continued to use torture against demonstrators, the report said, and some 12,000 civilians have been tried in military trials, which it called "unfair."

A military spokesman, meanwhile, told The Associated Press that the military has set up barbed wire and barricades around the security headquarters to prevent protesters from storming the building. "We are only here to protect the interior ministry," he said.

The spokesman, who asked not to be identified because he wasn't authorized to release the information, also said army officers and soldiers had been forbidden to enter Tahrir Square.

In violence elsewhere, Egypt's state-TV reported that three people were killed overnight in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia, east of Cairo, raising the overall death toll from the protests to 29.

The unrest also had an immediate impact on Egypt's economy, which is heavily dependent on tourism and had not fully recovered from the effect of the January revolution. The stock exchange temporarily suspended trading after the broader EGX100 index slumped 5 percent.

(AP) ? Garrett Uekman was remembered Monday night for his love for Arkansas, and those who knew him best said his impact on the university was far greater than the short time he spent there.

Several thousand mourners gathered for a candlelight vigil in Bud Walton Arena to remember Uekman, a redshirt freshman tight end who died suddenly on Sunday.

Uekman's picture remained on the arena's videoboard throughout the ceremony, and those in attendance wore stickers that had black ribbons wrapped in red with a white "88" on them, in honor of Uekman's number.

"This is a sad day for the Razorback family," Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said. "And a tragedy that reminds us just how precious life is.

"Moments like this make you realize just how insignificant wins and losses can be and how important the people around you are. Garrett was important to all of us."

Uekman's parents, Danny and Michelle, and his sister, Meagan, led the football team into the arena and were followed by Petrino and his family. Several players wiped tears away and held their heads down as they took their seats.

Arkansas Chancellor Dave Gearhart was among a group of speakers that included Razorbacks sophomore Austin Tate, who called Uekman his "best friend" and a "brother." The ceremony ended with the approximately 2,500 candles providing light in the darkened arena.

"I speak for the whole team when I say Garrett Uekman will always be a part of us," Tate said.

Uekman, 19, was last seen playing video games Sunday morning and was found unresponsive in his dorm room an hour later. University police said they won't release the incident report until after the autopsy report is released.

The No. 3 Razorbacks (10-1, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) face No. 1 LSU (11-0, 7-0) in Baton Rouge, La., on Friday.

"He would tell to not be sitting around crying," Tate said. "He would probably kick our butts and tell us we're wasting our time and need to get ready for LSU.

"He loved being a part of this team and cherished every moment that he was here. I just wish I had a lifetime of knowing Garrett Uekman."

LSU coach Les Miles expressed his condolences Monday afternoon and said he tried to call Petrino but was unable to get through. Uekman was recruited by the Tigers before signing with Arkansas.

"He visited here and we thought the world of him," Miles said. "He conducted himself very well on our campus, and I recall he came here with his mother. Again, it is very unfortunate. Death is never timely and certainly is most difficult when you are young."

Earlier on Monday, more than 500 people went to Little Rock Catholic High School for Boys, where Uekman played, to pray. The school had initially planned on a rosary service for no more than three dozen people.

"This started out as a rosary for the senior football players and basketball players who knew Garrett. This was a way to help them grieve," Principal Steve Straessle said. "It went from being a rosary for about two or three dozen to, it got out on Facebook, and the kids who were recent graduates called and asked if they could come and then their parents called and asked if they could come and of course, we want to welcome as many as we can."

Beneath banners honoring state championship teams in football, basketball, soccer and the Quiz Bowl, students, alumni and parents stood, sat in the bleachers or kneeled on the hardwood floor as the school's rector, Msgr. Lawrence Frederick, led prayers. Many wept.

Also, some students used black tape to tape "88" on the backs of their white shirts.

"It's tough to see them under this situation," said Central High football coach Ellis "Scooter" Register, who coached Uekman and the Catholic High Rockets two seasons ago.

Petrino's weekly news conference was canceled by the university, and Arkansas' players weren't available to talk on Sunday or Monday.

Some took to Twitter to express their sorrow.

"Garrett Uekman rest in peace my brother," running back Knile Davis tweeted. "Watch over us as we continue to chase the dream u started with us. I love u and will forever miss u."

They also made it clear they will use Uekman's death as motivation against LSU.

"A team with something to play for can be dangerous, but a team with someone to play for is unstoppable," freshman tackle Brey Cook tweeted.

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said counseling services would be made available to players following the passing of Uekman, who had seen action in nine games this season.

"He will be part of us forever," Petrino said.

'Breaking Dawn' Scores Fifth-Biggest Box-Office Debut

'Twilight' flick's $139.5 million weekend puts it in the record books, with 'Happy Feet Two' at a distant second.

"Twilight" fans raced to theaters faster than Jacob running to stop Bella and Edward's wedding and gave "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" the fifth-biggest opening weekend of all time.

The fourth film in the romantic vampires-and-werewolves phenomenon collected $139.5 million domestically (more than $30 million of which was from midnight showings early Friday) for an estimated $283.5 million worldwide haul.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" stands behind only "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" ($169.2 million), "The Dark Knight" ($158.4 million), "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million) and 2009's "New Moon" ($169.2 million) on the all-time opening-weekend scorecard. It's worth noting that the "Twilight" grosses haven't relied on pricier 3-D or IMAX tickets like "Potter" or "Dark Knight." The new movie's numbers were within roughly 2 percent of the "New Moon" franchise best and helped propel the series' overall numbers past $2 billion worldwide.

Of the 54 territories where the movie opened in nearly 10,000 venues, the best market outside North America for "Breaking Dawn" was Robert Pattinson's native U.K., which accounted for $22 million of the worldwide gross. Strong territories also included Russia ($15 million), France ($14.5 million), Australia ($12.2 million), Italy ($12 million), Spain ($11.6 million) and Brazil ($10.2 million), where some of the film was shot.

Director Bill Condon's first "Twilight" movie suffered the worst reviews of the generally critically panned series but collected a so-so "B+" CinemaScore from the fans who rushed out to see it ("New Moon" enjoyed an "A-" CinemaScore while "Eclipse" scored a straight "A"). The acclaimed filmmaker behind critical darlings "Gods and Monsters," "Kinsey" and two-time Oscar winner "Dreamgirls" will helm "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" as well, which adapts the second half of Stephenie Meyer's fourth and final "Twilight" book. "Part 2" is due in theaters next year and will, of course, star Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, alongside the rest of the "Saga" regulars.

"Breaking Dawn - Part 1" cost Summit Entertainment a reported $110 million to produce after tax rebates. By comparison, the first "Twilight" film was made for an estimated $37 million. The "Breaking Dawn" audience was about 80 percent female, according to Summit, but 50 percent of the crowd was older than 25. Comparatively, only 46 percent of the "Eclipse" audience was over 25.

"Happy Feet Two" was a distant second to "Breaking Dawn" over the weekend, earning just $22 million in its debut. The animated sequel suffered from poor reviews and a five-year gap since the original. Last weekend's #1 movie, "Immortals," was #3 with $12.2 million. Adam Sandler's critically reviled "Jack and Jill" was #4 with $12 million. "Puss in Boots" rounded out the top five with another $10.7 million for an impressive $122.3 million gross. The "Shrek" spin-off has enjoyed mostly positive reviews from critics too.

While all other movies at the box office were dwarfed by the success of "Twilight," there was one category where the second-to-last entry in the franchise suffered defeat: per-screen average. "The Descendants," which has already generated Oscar buzz for star George Clooney, opened in just 29 theaters but managed to clear $1.29 million. That's an average of $42,150 per location. "Breaking Dawn," by comparison, was available in 4,061 places, which equates to an average of $34,245 per location. "Descendants" also counts a book (about a man who learns of his wife's affair as she lays in a coma from a boating accident) as its source material. It's only the fifth directorial feature from writer/director Alexander Payne, whose filmography includes "Sideways," "About Schmidt" and "Election."

This weekend, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" will see competition from Jason Segel's spirited and reverential revival of "The Muppets" (which currently boasts a perfect 100 score on film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes); iconic filmmaker Martin Scorsese's 3-D adventure "Hugo"; and kids' flick "Arthur Christmas," among others. Horror master David Cronenberg's period drama "A Dangerous Method" and Oscar bait "My Week With Marilyn," which stars Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe, open in limited release.

Egyptians protest at army, clashes kill at least 12 (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? At least 12 people were killed in clashes between security forces and crowds protesting against Egypt's ruling military council in some of the worst violence since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak.

With just a week before voting in the first free parliamentary election in decades, the confrontations in the capital Cairo and other cities raised worries about how smooth voting will be.

Protesters camped out for a third night on Monday in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the 28-day uprising that ended Mubarak's 30-year rule. [ID:nL5E7MK0N3]

Egyptians elect a new parliament in a staggered vote that starts on November 28, but even when the assembly is picked, presidential powers remain with the army until a presidential poll, which may not happen until late 2012 or early 2013. Protesters want a much swifter transition.

Teargas has rained down on demonstrators and police have beaten them with batons in a bid to end the protest. Angry protesters brandished spent shotgun cartridges and bullet casings on Sunday, although police denied using live rounds.

Police backed by army officers fired salvoes of gas canisters and charged demonstrators in the square as darkness fell on Sunday, temporarily sending protesters fleeing.

They burned down banners and Internet video clips, which could not be independently checked, showed police beating protesters with sticks, pulling them by the hair and, in one case, dumping what appeared to be a corpse on piles of rubbish.

But demonstrators swiftly regrouped in sidestreets and returned to take control of the square.

Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Mubarak's defense minister for two decades and who leads the army council, has become a target of protests.

"The people want the toppling of the Field Marshal," protesters frequently chanted.

"I don't want Tantawi ... I am staying tonight," said Ayman Ramadan, a data entry employee, said early on Monday morning.

State television said at least 10 people were killed on Sunday, raising the death toll since Saturday, when clashes erupted, to at least 12. Hundreds have been wounded.

SWIFT TRANSITION

The demonstration that began on Friday was initially led by Islamists, angry at a bid by the army-backed cabinet to lay down principles for a new constitution that would have kept the army out of the control of a future civilian government.

But since then, the protest has largely been driven by the same youthful activists who galvanized Egyptians to bring down Mubarak, putting national pride before religion.

One of those groups, April 6 youth movement, told Egypt's state news agency it would stay in Cairo's Tahrir and continue sit-ins in other cities until its demands were met, including a call for a presidential vote no later than April.

Other demands include replacing the current cabinet with a national salvation government and an immediate investigation into the clashes in Tahrir and trial of those implicated in it.

Presidential candidate Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, an ultra-conservative Salafi Islamist, told protesters in Tahrir: "We are demanding as the minimum that power be handed over within six months."

The army has denied any desire to cling onto power and says it will not let any violence delay the parliamentary poll. It insists it can ensure security during the vote.

"We are all insisting on having the election on time -- the government, parties and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces," cabinet spokesman Mohamed Hegazy told Reuters.

But analysts say a surge in violence in voting, a common feature of elections in Mubarak's era of rigged polls, could undermine the assembly's legitimacy if the result is questioned and deepen public frustration at the army's handling of the transition.

Presidential hopefuls Mohamed ElBaradei and Abdallah al-Ashaal denounced violence against protesters and called for a national salvation government, state news agency MENA said.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, urged Egypt's interim authority to halt the violence.

"I urge calm and restraint and condemn the use of violence in the strongest terms," she said.

British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt condemned the clashes and said the deaths were "deeply regrettable."

Liberal groups are dismayed by the military trials of thousands of civilians and the army's failure to scrap a hated emergency law. Islamists eyeing a strong showing in the next parliament suspect the army wants to curtail their influence.

Analysts say Islamists could win 40 percent of parliamentary seats, with a big portion going to the Muslim Brotherhood.

But analysts say predicting a result is tricky, given the vast number of new parties and voices in Egypt's political landscape.

Will the Mars Science Lab Be One of the Last Nuclear NASA Space Missions? (ContributorNetwork)

The Mars Science Lab, with its Curiosity rover, is powered by a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator that uses decaying plutonium 238 to provide power and heat. A shortage of the nuclear fuel may mean that the MSL will be one of the last of its kind.

What are radioisotope thermoelectric generators?

Radioisotope thermoelectric generator or RTGs use the heat generated by decaying plutonium 238 to provide heat and electricity. The RTGs use electronic parts to convert the heat into electricity. The RTGs have been called "nuclear batteries" and have been used in a variety of NASA space craft since the Apollo program. The space craft include the two Voyagers, Galileo, Ulysses, Cassini, Pluto New Horizons, and now the Mars Science Lab.

Why use RTGs instead of solar panels?

Solar panels generate only a limited amount of electricity as compared to RTGs. For missions that voyage far from the sun, such as to the Outer Planets, and/or are large and complex, such as the Mars Science Lab, RTGs are perfectly suited.

Why are RTGs considered controversial?

Some environmental and anti-nuclear groups oppose the use of RTGs for safety and ideological reasons. They have expressed the fear that a launch accident would scatter radioactive plutonium across a wide area of South Florida and even beyond. NASA replies that the plutonium 238 used in RTGs are well shielded and have been tested against the forces that would be exerted in a launch accident. NASA has given assurances that even a launch accident would fail to breach the containment of the plutonium, thus making the fears of the environmental protestors groundless.

What about the shortage of plutonium 238?

During the Cold War, plutonium 238 was derived as a by-product from the building of nuclear warheads. As the Cold War ended, the supply of plutonium 238 has dried up. Some amount has been bought from the Russians, but that source of supply has just about depleted as well. While the government has not revealed how much plutonium 238 it has in its stockpile, it is suggested that there is just enough for one more mission on the scale of Mars Science Lab/

What is the problem with producing more?

Plutonium 238 would be produced by the Department of Energy for NASA. Bothe agencies are willing to enter into this arrangement. The cost is not very great, about $50 million or so over the next five years. Unfortunately, the effort to restart production of plutonium 238 is being blocked in the Congress. The issue is complicated by the fact that the cost would be shared by DOE and NASA and therefore has to be approved by two sets of committees.
