Forbes top schools list highlights debt, costs

Pomona College ranked No. 2 on the Forbes list of top colleges. Stanford, also in California, was at the top of the list.

CNBC

Pomona College ranked No. 2 on the Forbes list of top colleges. Stanford, also in California, was at the top of the list.

Forbes' magazine's list of America's Top Colleges for 2013 is notable for what's not in the top slot: an Ivy League school.

The distinction of being number one this year goes to Stanford University (alma mater of Yahoo chief Marissa Mayer). The number-two school is Pomona College, a small liberal arts college in Southern California.

A slightly more diverse pool of "top" schools doesn?t make it easier for middle-class kids to afford an elite education, though, and although the rankings take future earnings into account, they don?t illuminate where surgeons, judges and other highly paid professionals went to school.

Read more about what went into the rankings

The Ivies, East Coast schools that have reigned supreme for the last two centuries, still pick up four of the top 10 spots ? Princeton, Yale and Columbia are numbers three through five, respectively, and Harvard is number eight ? and all are in the top 20. But schools on the West Coast have proven they are competitive. Stanford and Pomona climbed from numbers 23 and 20, respectively, in five years, and the top-ranked public school on the list is the University of California, Berkeley.

This may reflect a diversification in the assessment of what constitutes a ?top? school, and perhaps an infatuation with Silicon Valley and the technology sector.

So-called STEM jobs get a lot of attention, but they comprise only about 6 percent of the job market, said Anthony Carnevale, director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

?They're very important jobs ? in part because of who's pushing for them ? the high tech industry,? Carnevale said. ?There's another 94 percent of the workers who need jobs.?

Although 3.75 percent of a school?s rank is determined by the number of students who get Ph.Ds, ?The real metric is earnings,? Carnevale said. ?What they should be focusing on is professional degrees ? any kind of doctorate that has an occupational attachment.?

But paying for degrees in hopes they lead to high-income jobs has become more difficult. Two-thirds of students now graduate with an average $26,600 in debt, according to The Institute for College Access and Success.

Each of the top 10 schools costs more than $50,000 a year with the exception of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Students there pay with a commitment: five years of military service after graduation.

Forbes does factor student debt in its ranking formula, which accounts for 17.5 percent of a ranking?s weight. TICAS president Lauren Asher finds it lacking, though.

"It doesn't appear to include the share of students who graduate with debt or their average debt when they graduate, which are better indicators of what your debt expectations should be," Asher said. More detailed information about each school's individual debt profile is included in its summary listing, but it's not part of the weighted ranking that separates top schools from the rest of the pack.

When Forbes started ranking schools in 2008, debt wasn?t included in the criteria at all.

?At the time, I think the debt issue and the financial issues were a little less prominent in the discussion,? said Richard Vedder, director of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity. ?It?s become a bigger issue.?

The list remains dominated by more-expensive private institutions, with only one state school (Berkeley) in the top 25. Forbes does compile a ?best value? list, but it doesn?t take a 4.0 GPA to figure out which one college administrators would rather be on; Forbes even dubs its top 100 list ?the only schools that matter.?

These lists feed into a kind of self-reinforcing feedback loop that Carnevale said makes it increasingly difficult for states to compete. ?It's sort of a shame because building those elite public [schools] is really a remarkable achievement,? he said.

NTSB says Southwest jet's nose gear landed first

NEW YORK (AP) -- A Southwest Airlines jet that made a hard landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport touched down on its front nose wheel before the sturdier main landing gear in back touched down, federal investigators said Thursday.

The nose-pointed-down landing described by investigators violated the airline's normal procedures, Southwest said.

Flight 345 from Nashville, Tenn., skidded off the runway Monday and came to rest on its nose after the front landing gear crumpled. About 150 people were aboard the Boeing 737, and 16 passengers suffered minor injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board released preliminary information about the accident late Thursday. The finding was based on video and other evidence, it said.

NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss would not say whether pilot error contributed to the hard landing or if the nose gear should have been able to withstand the impact.

"That's something we're going to look at during the investigation," Weiss said.

Southwest spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said the "landing scenario that the NTSB described is not in accordance with our operating procedures." She provided no further details.

About 4 seconds prior to touchdown, the plane's pitch was about 2 degrees nose-up, the NTSB revealed. When the plane touched the runway, it was pitched down about 3 degrees, it said.

Pilots are trained to land on the main landing gear, which are much sturdier than the nose wheel, and then gently ease the nose of the plane down until the nose wheel is on the runway.

Denny Kelly, a retired airline pilot and now a consultant and private accident investigator in Dallas, said that if the Southwest plane was pointing nose-down 3 degrees when it touched the runway, "That's a problem."

"If you are pitched down at all, you will land on the nose wheel. At touchdown, the nose should be pointed up at 3 to 5 degrees," Kelly said.

The NTSB had said Wednesday that the landing gear "collapsed rearward and upward into the fuselage, damaging the electronics bay that houses avionics."

It posted a photo showing the jet's electronics bay penetrated by the landing gear with only the right axle still attached.

Investigators recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders on Tuesday. They'll be analyzed by the NTSB.

Long-Distance Relationship May Strengthen Couple's Bond - Health ...

couple-airport-happy-400x400

FRIDAY, July 19 (HealthDay News) ? Does distance really make the heart grow fonder? Maybe so: According to a new study, people in long-distance romantic relationships can form stronger bonds than those in normal relationships.

Dating couples in long-distance and normal relationships told researchers about their daily interactions using different methods: face-to-face, phone calls, video chat, texting, instant messaging and email.

For a week, the participants reported to what extent they shared about themselves and experienced intimacy, and how much they they felt their partners did the same thing, for the study in the June issue of the Journal of Communication.

Long-distance couples had greater feelings of intimacy due to two factors: They disclosed more about themselves and they idealized their partners? behaviors, said study authors Crystal Jiang of City University of Hong Kong and Jeffrey Hancock of Cornell University.

Long-distance relationships are increasingly common and people use many kinds of communications technologies to maintain their romantic bonds, a journal news release noted. Recent figures show that 3 million married couples in the United States live apart. Between 25 percent and 50 percent of college students are currently in long-distance relationships and up to 75 percent have had one at some point.

Even so, many people believe that long-distance relationships are challenging.

?Indeed, our culture emphasizes being together physically and frequent face-to-face contact for close relationships, but long-distance relationships clearly stand against all these values. People don?t have to be so pessimistic about long-distance romance,? Jiang said in a journal news release. ?The long-distance couples try harder than geographically close couples in communicating affection and intimacy, and their efforts do pay back.?

Disney researchers create computer models that capture style and ...

By monitoring artists as they sketch human faces, stroke by stroke, scientists at Disney Research, Pittsburgh, have built computer models that learn each artist's drawing style, how they use strokes and how they select features to highlight as they interpret a face into a portrait.

A better understanding of this abstraction process, the researchers stated, not only is interesting from an artistic point of view, but also can help in developing artificial drawing tools.

"There's something about an artist's interpretation of a subject that people find compelling," said Moshe Mahler, a digital artist at Disney Research, Pittsburgh. "We're trying to capture that ? to create a computer model of it ? in a way that no one has done before."

Mahler, along with Itamar Berger and Ariel Shamir of the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, Israel, will present the findings at ACM SIGGRAPH 2013, the International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, July 21-25 in Anaheim, Calif. Jessica Hodgins, Vice President of Disney Research, and Elizabeth Carter, a Disney Research, Pittsburgh associate, also were part of the research team.

Other computer programs can create line drawings from photos and some can mimic certain stroke styles. The Disney Research, Pittsburgh approach, by contrast, is built on a database representing abstractions of a set of artists.

To create the database, the researchers recruited seven artists. Each sketched portraits based on 24 photographs of male and female faces using a stylus pen that enabled the researchers to record each stroke. The artists created four sketches of each photo, with decreasing time intervals allowed for each ? 270, 90, 30 and 15 seconds. The result was a dataset of 672 sketches at four abstraction levels.

The dataset contains about 8,000 strokes for each artist, with each stroke categorized as shading strokes or contour strokes, with contour strokes subdivided into complex and simple strokes.

"Watching these strokes accumulate was an interesting part of this project," Berger said. Some artists started with the eyes, others with the outlines of the face. One of the artists had no discernible pattern, starting "wherever."

The analysis did not only focus on strokes style but also on the geometric interpretation of the face by the artist and how it is conveyed in the drawing. For instance, one artist consistently spaced eyes closer together in the sketches than they appear in reality, while another tended to draw wide jaws. Identifying these tendencies may help artists correct bad habits, Shamir said, though in other cases these variations may simply be recognized as artistic tendencies or style.

The researchers also used their system to synthesize sketches based on new face photos. In a perceptual study, test subjects were then asked to match sketches based on style, to match synthesized sketches with those of the actual artist and to try to identify which sketches were real and which were synthesized. The results demonstrated that the sketch generation method produced multiple, distinct styles that are similar to hand-drawn sketches.

What the program can't do, Mahler emphasized, is replicate the spontaneity of an artist and their ability to balance the drawing as they work. "Our approach only understands the trends of how an artist might work," he added. And, because all of the artists based their work on photos, even the hand-drawn sketches were more constrained and reflected less personality than would have been the case if based on living, breathing subjects.

Future work could extend these techniques to subjects beyond faces or people, to other drawing techniques and might also include time-based animation, Shamir said.

What are the Risks Involve When Investing in Stocks

Investing in stocks involves risks. All investments have risk of losing money because no one can guarantee that you can make a profit. However, you can lessen the risk by carefully selecting the type of investment that you will venture out.

Even starting and owning a business involves risks. Actually, according to the statistics, more than 90% of businesses failed during their first year of operation.

risks of stock investing

Since investing in stocks is becoming popular these days because of the media mileage and attention given to it by TV companies, I would like to list and point out the risks involve when investing in stocks. Some people maybe clueless what stocks can bring to them because they are newbie in this thing.

For those people who have a little or advance background in stocks, I could say that you may already know what risks you are taking when putting your money on the stock of a company.

In this post, I would like to warn you about the risks you?re entering when investing in the stock market.

?

1. You may Lose Money

?

It is a fact. Investing in stocks is not a sure way to earn money because there are many factors you need to control to be able to do so. Losing money in stocks will only happen when you make a mistake of selling your shares for a price lower than the price when you bought it.

?

That?s why it is very important when investing in stocks that you have the discipline and self-control. Make sure that the money you invest in stocks will be there for more than 5 years or more.

?

In order not to lose money, don?t sell your shares for a price lower than you bought. However, in case you need to, that?s the only time you will lose money in stocks.

?

2. Profit is not Guaranteed

?

Earning a profit is not also sure fire when investing in stocks because you should control many factors. But the sad truth is, you cannot control all things like the response of majority of investors when there?s a bad news about the economy.

?

All legitimate investments have no guarantee of profit. Thus, if someone offers you an investment and they said that you will earn a sure profit, there?s a big chance that it is a scam.

?

Don?t become a victim of scam. Always study and understand what you are venturing out. Talk to friends and trusted relatives that know about investments like stocks and mutual funds so that you have firsthand information from the real people who invest in the stock market.

?

3. Stock Price may Go Up and Down

?

The price of stock depends on many factors. For example, the price may depend on the news on how it is performed in the previous year.

The performance of the company behind the stock greatly affects its stock price. Though there are many technical analyses, sometimes, it is not followed.

Therefore, it is very important that you don?t panic when the price is going down because for sure it will go up in the future especially for those big and established companies. Don?t sell your shares right away because you will lose money when you do so.

Wait until the price go up and sell on your target price where you can make a good profit. Some people suggest you can sell at 20-30% profit.

?

Final Thoughts

?

There?s several risks when investing in the stock market. Many people are clueless about it because they don?t want to study and understand what are they entering.

It is always good that you understand first the business of the company behind the stock. Even though you don?t know technical matters like P/E ratio, dividend, debt- to-equity ratio of the stock, you should as much as possible study how the company is doing business and who are the people managing the company.

Try to implement it in the same way (actually, a live wallpaper is much like any other android app). You can also use OpenGL to take advantage of the hardware acceleration (using AndEngine, for example).

If you wish more tutorials, take a look here.

Sony to sell 'world's first' SD card-based backup for PCs

Sony wants to simplify laptop backups.

The company says it will soon launch a new line of SD cards and accompanying software that will allow laptop users to carry their backups along with them while on the move. The solution is meant to take advantage of the memory card slots that are increasingly standard on portable computers, but are rarely used other than for transferring data from digital cameras or camcorders.

Like other backup solutions, Sony's software allows the user to designate folders and specific files to be backed up, either when they are modified or on a schedule. The backups are encrypted using AES 256-bit, and the cards also require a password for access. The company's new "Real-time Backup Utility" software works only with its memory cards, but it is allowing trial downloads that work for 30 days with cards from other companies.

Sony announced the product on Thursday, and said it will be available in Japan from August 20 in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions. The backup software will initially support only Windows-based machines. The cards are rated Class 4 speed, a standard that provides write speeds of at least 4MBps.

The company is still considering if and when it will launch outside of Japan, a spokeswoman said.

The largest 64GB version will cost around ?14,000 (US$140). That is about the three times the current price of a blank 64GB SD memory card with similar specifications. The software on the Sony cards also takes up about 10 percent of the space: the 64GB card provides about 57.6GB for user storage.

Developers have created versions of complete operating systems that can run off of SD cards or USB thumb drives, including versions of Debian Linux.

India police agency says Wal-Mart violated investment rules

By Nandita Bose

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc violated Indian rules governing foreign investment, the country's top police agency said in a letter to a member of parliament seen by Reuters.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said in the letter that according to its analysis, Wal-Mart's investment violated Reserve Bank of India guidelines and Foreign Exchange Management Act regulations.

However, it said violation of FEMA regulations does not fall under its remit, so it could not investigate the matter.

Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has been investigated for putting money into a retailer before the government opened the sector to global players in September 2012. It entered India in 2010 with a $100 million investment in a consultancy, Cedar Support Services, which was a retailer when it began its corporate life.

Wal-Mart has denied breaking investment rules and said on Friday it had cooperated with the government during the investigation.

Its entry into Asia's third-largest economy has been slowed by several issues, including an internal bribery probe and still-evolving rules governing the retail sector.

The CBI sent the letter to M.P. Achuthan, a communist member of parliament, who in September had accused Wal-Mart of breaking entry rules.

At the time, the Indian government asked its Enforcement Directorate, which investigates financial crimes, to look into the case. The Enforcement Directorate has not announced any decision and on Friday could not be reached for comment.

A CBI spokeswoman did not provide further details.

"After nine months of the case not moving ahead at the Enforcement Directorate, I wrote to the CBI and asked them to intervene and investigate and they have found violations," Achuthan told Reuters.

"This certainly takes the investigation forward and now the ED should act quickly," he said.

Senior government officials told Reuters last November that if Wal-Mart was found to have broken the law, it could face a penalty of up to three times its initial $100 million investment.

2013 Fantasy Football: QB Stat Projections (11-32)

11. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons
Outlook: One of the most consistent fantasy quarterbacks, Ryan?s made steady improvements in each of his five NFL seasons. His inability to run the ball, and the addition of Steven Jackson, prevents him from landing in the top 10. Still, it wouldn?t surprise me to see him outperform his projections.

Projections: 4,532 passing yards, 74 rushing yards, 30 touchdowns (1 rushing), & 18 turnovers (3 fumbles)

12. Eli Manning, N.Y. Giants
Outlook: The gap from Ryan to Manning is very significant. It?s in fact the largest point gap (about 36 points) from one quarterback to the other among the top 30. An unproven running game gives Manning upside, but not enough to warrant upper echelon fantasy status.

Projections: 4,226 passing yards, 45 rushing yards, 28 touchdowns, & 23 turnovers (5 fumbles)

13. Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals
Outlook: As the top 15?s most surprising entry, Dalton has two critical things going for him. He gets to play with A.J. Green and he?s a sneaky-good scrambler. These two elements allowed him to score 31 touchdowns (four rushing) last season. His 31 scores were higher than Joe Flacco, Eli Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger. Don?t be afraid to wait on Dalton, while others reach for those bigger named quarterbacks.

Projections: 3,716 passing yards, 117 rushing yards, 30 touchdowns (4 rushing), & 22 turnovers (5 fumbles)

14. Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Outlook: Freeman?s inconsistency will scare many fantasy owners away, but Vincent Jackson really helped his progression, and Tampa?s inability to stop anyone gave Freeman a number of high-scoring opportunities.

Projections: 4,005 passing yards, 171 rushing yards, 23 touchdowns, & 18 turnovers (2 fumbles)

15. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers
Outlook: It wasn?t long ago that Rivers was a top-flight fantasy quarterback. Playing for Mike McCoy will help him turn around, but Antonio Gates? regression, and the failure to replace Vincent Jackson is holding back Rivers? fantasy value.

Projections: 4,137 passing yards, 65 rushing yards, 25 touchdowns, & 20 turnovers (5 fumbles)

16. Tony Romo, Dallas CowboysTony Romo
Outlook: Many associate risk versus reward scenarios with younger, scrambling quarterbacks. However, Romo also fits that bill. He?s a talented thrower, but he doesn?t have an injury-free history, and he?s playing behind an atrocious offensive line. He could finish anywhere from the top 10 to riding your bench because of injury. Use your best judgment.

Projections: 3,794 passing yards, 60 rushing yards, 25 touchdowns (1 rushing), & 14 turnovers (3 fumbles)

17. Matt Schaub, Houston Texans
Outlook: Durability is always a red flag regarding Schaub?s fantasy status, but it?s no longer as relevant, since the Houston quarterback is just a spot starter.

Projections: 3,907 passing yards, 24 rushing yards, 24 touchdowns (1 rushing), & 13 turnovers (2 fumbles)

18. Carson Palmer, Arizona Cardinals
Outlook: If Palmer can keep his interception total down, then he?s a capable fantasy backup. Larry Fitzgerald?s also arguably the best player Palmer?s played with in his 10-year career, so don?t sleep on the former Bengal and Raider as an occasional starter.

Projections: 4,230 passing yards, 48 rushing yards, 23 touchdowns (1 rushing), & 21 turnovers (4 fumbles)

19. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers
Outlook: Because he likes to hang onto the football, Roethlisberger takes many hits. The wear and tear is starting show, as the Pittsburgh signal caller hasn?t played a full season since ?08, which was their last Super Bowl championship. He?s no more than a backup, given the offensive system and the departure of Mike Wallace.

Projections: 3,763 passing yards, 77 rushing yards, 24 touchdowns, & 15 turnovers (4 fumbles)

20. Matt Flynn, Oakland Raiders
Outlook: The Raiders are betting on Flynn?s only two NFL starts as being an accurate representation of his ability. There?s a big difference between Green Bay?s receiving corps and Oakland?s, though.

Projections: 3,923 passing yards, 41 rushing yards, 23 touchdowns, & 17 turnovers (4 fumbles)

21. Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens
Outlook: Among quarterbacks, there?s simply no way Flacco?s average draft position will fall to No. 21. Many fantasy owners will likely jump at the opportunity to draft him somewhere in the mid to early teens given his momentum from winning a championship. A better strategy is to ignore any hype, as the reigning Super Bowl MVP has never thrown for 4,000 yards or more than 25 touchdowns in a season.

Projections: 3,715 passing yards, 63 rushing yards, 23 touchdowns (1 rushing), & 15 turnovers (4 fumbles)

22. Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs
Outlook: Andy Reid does get notable fantasy success out of quarterbacks (namely Donovan McNabb & Michael Vick), but it would seem unlikely that Reid would change Smith?s established style of play.

Projections: 3,143 passing yards, 203 rushing yards, 21 touchdowns (1 rushing), & 9 turnovers (3 fumbles)

23. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears
Outlook: Marc Trestman?s system, which will rely on more three-step drops, is a major boon to Cutler, but the Bears are just as likely to rely on Matt Forte as Cutler?s arm. Keep the Chicago quarterback on your radar, but mostly in a backup role.

Projections: 3,296 passing yards, 170 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns (2 rushing), & 19 turnovers (4 fumbles)

24. Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins
Outlook: The Dolphins won the off-season, but when has that ever gotten anyone anywhere? Tannehill had his moments as a rookie, but he remains a work in progress and year two is simply too soon to elevate him to a fantasy starter.

Projections: 3,202 passing yards, 185 rushing yards, 20 touchdowns (2 rushing), & 14 turnovers (5 fumbles)

25. E.J. Manuel, Buffalo Bills
Outlook: It?s always difficult to gauge a rookie?s transition to the pros, but Manuel?s a dynamic quarterback surrounded by good talent. He?s a definite target in dynasty and deeper leagues, but I?d take a wait-and-see approach in standard leagues.

Projections: 3,130 passing yards, 231 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns (2 rushing), & 18 turnovers (5 fumbles)

26. Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams
Outlook: Drafting Tavon Austin was a major addition for St. Louis, but Jeff Fisher teams and fantasy quarterbacks, never mesh well. History suggests a running back emerging as a top 20 positional player before Bradford.

Projections: 3,326 passing yards, 104 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns, & 14 turnovers

27. Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles
Outlook: We?ve reached the under 200-point threshold. Vick still has to win the starting job, but his capabilities as a runner always gives him potential. He?ll be worth an early-season pickup, if he can take to Chip Kelly?s system.

Projections: 2,948 passing yards, 472 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns, & 16 turnovers (8 fumbles)

28. Brandon Weeden, Cleveland Browns
Outlook: The Browns play in poor weather, while having one of the league?s worst receiving corps. They also have an emerging star at running back. None of this bolds well for Weeden?s fantasy fortunes.

Projections: 3,383 passing yards, 73 rushing yards, 19 touchdowns, & 19 turnovers

29. Christian Ponder, Minnesota Vikings
Outlook: You really have to go all-in on Minnesota, if you believe in Ponder as a fantasy option. If Greg Jennings returns to form and Cordarrelle Patterson makes an impact as a rookie, then perhaps Ponder displays backup numbers.

Projections: 2,700 passing yards, 226 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns, & 18 turnovers (4 fumbles)

30. Mark Sanchez, N.Y. Jets
Outlook: There?s simply too much ambiguity surrounding the Jets? quarterback situation to consider any of their quarterbacks in fantasy.

Projections: 3,794 passing yards, 35 rushing yards, 17 touchdowns, & 31 turnovers (10 fumbles)

31. Jake Locker, Tennessee Titans
Outlook: An underachieving group of receivers and poor accuracy keeps Locker off the fantasy radar.

Projections: 2,941 passing yards, 398 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns (2 rushing), & 23 turnovers (5 fumbles)

32. Blaine Gabbert, Jacksonville Jaguars
Outlook: Like many of the under 200-point crowd, Gabbert will be lucky to start 10 or more games in 2013.

Projections: 1,647 passing yards, 81 rushing yards, 9 touchdowns, & 3 turnovers

Verizon CFO: 'We will not touch our service pricing' after launch of VZ Edge

Verizon

Deployment of VZ Edge expected to have no affect on financial results

Following both the release of its new "Verizon Edge" upgrade plans and Q2 2013 financial results, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo had some interesting statements regarding the new upgrade scheme. When asked if there was any plan to change Verizon's service pricing to reflect the new off-contract and unsubsidized "Edge" upgrades, Shammo clearly stated "We will not touch our service pricing." That's a big disappointing to many of us who have done the rough math on VZ Edge, which shows how much more expensive it will be for customers. T-Mobile, by contrast, reduced the cost of its service plans to reflect the subsidy component being moved to an "Equipment Installment Plan".

Further, Shammo does not expect many customers to move over to the new VZ Edge plan, expecting them to continue along with the two-year contract and subsidized phone model. So few customers are expected to try the new system when it launches August 25th that it will have no impact on Verizon's earnings.

Netflix proves it's a player with 14 Emmy nods

TV

"House of Cards" received 14 Emmy nominations Thursday.

Melinda Sue Gordon / AP

Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey were both nominated for their roles on "House of Cards," which also received an Emmy nod for outstanding drama.

Don't be surprised if on Emmy night, you hear a first: "The red envelope, please."

No longer just a service that delivers DVDs in nifty packaging, Netflix proved it's a ground breaking television force on Thursday when the Internet streaming service scored a whopping 14 Emmy nominations. Netflix broke into all of the major drama categories, and stole the spotlight not just from broadcast network stalwarts, but from the traditional medium of television itself.

The service, which kickstarted its original programming model this year, earned nine nominations for the David Fincher-directed "House of Cards," three nominations for its "Arrested Development" reboot; and two nods for the critically-panned "Hemlock Grove." "House of Cards" stands against formidable foes: last year's winner "Homeland," "Breaking Bad," "Mad Men," "Game of Thrones" and "Downton Abbey."

"We think it?s very validating for Internet television?television is not defined by how it gets to the screen," chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in an interview Thursday, shortly after the nominations were announced. "It?s defined by what?s on the screen. And we?re thrilled that Emmy voters were open to our format and saw our programming on the same par with the best of cable and broadcast and premium television. It?s a vindication for new media, for the Internet and Internet television, for creative freedom, and for the use of technology to advance entertainment."

The way the audience can access shows on Netflix is not the only factor distinguishing it from the rest of television. Instead of producing a test pilot and screening it in front of test audiences, the company gathers big data from subscriber preferences to determine its programming choices. Netflix noticed its subscribers loved the original BBC series "House of Cards," loved movies that starred Kevin Spacey, were huge fans of films directed by David Fincher and voila, Netflix moved ahead with a $100 million, 26-episode order.

The process has drawn criticism from the creative community and media who argue that art has given way to data-crunching. On Thursday, Sarandos said the data that led to his decision to make the show has nothing to do with how the show turned out. Its stars, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, also received lead dramatic actor nominations.

"I don?t think it?s even possible to reverse-engineer a great television show," Sarandos said. "What we were able to do was use our data and our numbers to better value the show and be able to predict that it would be very popular with consumers. There hasn?t been a popular show set in politics since ?The West Wing,? and that's because somebody made a decision that they wouldn?t be popular. But, in this case, the data showed there would be room for a show like that and that it was less about politics more about corruption and power and greed and sex and all the things that people really love. 'House of Cards' is an example of picking a great content creator and a great piece of material and getting out of their way."

And "Cards" isn't the only success of the morning. Although "Arrested Development," which won an Emmy for outstanding comedy in 2004, did not crack the outstanding comedy race as many pundits had predicted, actor Jason Bateman was nominated for lead role in a comedy and the show received two other nominations: single-camera picture editing for a comedy series and music composition for a series. To the industry, it is all reminiscent of the era when premium cable network HBO emerged as a contender against the broadcast networks.

"When we announced we were going to do 'House of Cards,' it became serious for everybody. We had some of the best actors, writers and director in the business working on television for the first time, and I think that's why we are a destination for most great shows today. We're proud to be able to create programming that's competitive with people who have been doing it their whole lives."

Moody's upgrades outlook for U.S. government debt

WASHINGTON Moody's Investors Service upgraded the outlook for U.S. government debt to "stable" from "negative" and affirmed the United States' blue-chip Aaa rating.

The ratings agency cited a surprising drop in the federal deficit -- the difference between what the government collects in taxes and what it spends. The U.S. government is on track to report its lowest annual deficit in five years.

Through the first eight months of the budget year, the deficit has totaled $509.8 billion, according to the Treasury Departure. That's nearly $400 billion lower than the same period last year.

The Congressional Budget Office forecasts the annual deficit will be $670 billion when the budget year ends on Sept. 30. That would be well below last year's deficit of $1.09 trillion and the lowest since President Barack Obama took office. It would still be the fifth-largest deficit in U.S. history.

The deficit hit a peak 10.1 percent of gross domestic product -- the broadest measure of the U.S. economy -- in the depths of the Great Recession in 2009. The CBO expects the deficit to fall to 3.4 percent of GDP in 2014 and 2.1 percent in 2015.

Moody's had lowered the outlook to "negative" two years ago. But it never went as far as rival Standard & Poor's, which stripped the U.S. of its top credit rating in 2011.

S&P last month upgraded its outlook for long-term U.S. government debt but kept its rating at AA+, a notch below its top grade.

An improving economy and tax hikes and spending cuts that took effect this year have narrowed the government's budget gap.

Still, Moody's warned that the government needed to control longer-term deficits as Baby Boomers age and begin to collect Social Security and Medicare. Failure to do so "could put the rating under pressure again."

Why Zimmerman verdict might not roll back 'stand your ground' laws (+video)

The US attorney general, Juror B37, and even Stevie Wonder express reservations about self-defense laws like Florida's 'stand your ground' statute, a factor in the George Zimmerman trial. What's the likelihood such laws will be reconsidered?

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / July 17, 2013

George Zimmerman leaves court with his family after Zimmerman's not guilty verdict was read in Seminole Circuit Court in Sanford, Fla. on Saturday, July 13.

One legacy of the George Zimmerman not-guilty verdict in the death of Trayvon Martin may be to buttress the use of firearms in self-defense ? a reinforcement that has US officials and others worried that expansive new self-defense laws in the states could become vehicles for people to express their personal prejudices with gun violence.

Rick Scott has said no to their demands.

Attorney General Eric Holder raised the concern Tuesday during a speech to the NAACP, describing as "senseless" the self-defense doctrines that expand beyond defense of one's own home to self-protection in public places. Such laws allow ?violent situations to escalate,? he charged.

Even Juror B37, whose descriptions of the jury's race-blind deliberations in the Zimmerman trial provoked a backlash among those who believe racial profiling was the heart of the matter, ultimately cited Florida's expansive self-defense law as the reason for the acquittal. Her prayers, she said, are with those ?who have the influence and power to modify the laws that left me with no verdict option other than ?not guilty??.??

Indeed, the Florida judge in the case instructed the jury that under state law Zimmerman had "no duty to retreat and had the right to stand his ground and meet force with force" if he reasonably feared for his life or great bodily harm.

As attention zeroes in on so-called "stand your ground" laws (musician Stevie Wonder said Tuesday he won't perform in Florida until the law there is repealed), the obvious next question is, what's the likelihood of changing them? Poor to nonexistent, say some who track the gun culture in America.

?Non-gun owners are questioning Stand Your Ground laws ? [b]ut the gun lobby is too strong to allow such laws to be repealed,? writes Adam Winkler, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the author of ?Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America,? in an e-mail. ?For better or worse, stand your ground laws are here to stay.?

First passed in Florida in 2005 and now law in more than half the states, "stand your ground" statutes are designed to clip the wings of prosecutors who seek to bring charges against gun owners who shoot someone and claim self-defense. Usually, these defendants are allowed to ask a judge for immunity from prosecution, and the judge then weighs whether the "preponderance of evidence" ? a relatively low threshold of proof ? indicates that the shooter did or didn't act in self-defense under the law. The bottom line is that it?s harder for prosecutors to place responsibility on someone who claims self-defense.

On Feb. 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin, a black teenager, had shopped at a convenience store and was returning to a house where his father was staying in a gated neighborhood in Sanford, Fla., when Zimmerman spotted him, followed him, and then fatally shot him after Trayvon punched him. Originally released by Sanford police, Zimmerman was arrested by a special prosecutor 44 days later. The subsequent trial, which began June 10, was widely watched, culminating late Saturday in a not-guilty verdict.?

BPA and chlorine means bad news: Modified forms of bisphenol A found to alter hormone signaling in new, disturbing ways

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The ubiquity of the endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A led researchers to ask what it might be doing in publicly supplied, chlorinated drinking water. The answer: Chlorinated BPA has different, but no less profound effects on cell-signaling networks than unmodified BPA.

    Short Term Military Loans

Sometimes, due to the circumstances of a military lifestyle, borrowers may not have the highest credit scores. Frequent deployments or reassignments do not allow for developing the stability that credit agencies seek. Glitches can prevent periodic paychecks from being available in a predictable and timely matter. Meanwhile, bills and late-payment fees mount steadily. Sometimes, for reasons beyond their control, military borrowers can find themselves ineligible for prime credit rates. Instead, those who serve in a military capacity often discover they are only eligible for sub-prime credit rates when applying for short term military loans. To be fair, sub-prime lenders are not always the predatory lenders they are assumed to be. In fact, one must remember that they at least provide borrowers in this situation with an opportunity to receive much-needed funds. By faithfully repaying such loans, the military borrower may be able to improve a credit score to the point where he or she is eligible for a better interest rate. Such loans can help keep a person afloat until finances improve.

Loans may be available for amounts ranging from $500 to $10,000 for certain military personnel. The amount of money available for borrowing usually is determined by the person's ability to repay the loan. This is measured by the borrower's income and present debts. Once the application and required paperwork has been submitted, a decision about short term military loans can usually be given in a day, and approved funds can be directly deposited into a stateside account within several days. If the applicant wishes, a check can also be mailed to a U.S. address.

Another popular choice for short term military loans is a payday loan. Most financial advisors look to this option as the least desirable solution because of the extremely high interest rates on these loans. Also, there is a great likelihood of becoming mired in ongoing debt due to the way these loans flip over if they are not repaid in a timely manner. Fees which are imposed in this case serve to make it even more difficult to become free of the debt.

Using a credit card or cash advance to fund short term military loans is only a slightly better answer to this dilemma. Interest rates, although much better than those imposed by payday loans, can still be significant, and balances can mount steadily. This is especially true if only the minimum amount is repaid each month. Minimum payments cover only slightly more than the interest costs, ensuring that the borrower will end up paying many times the original loan amount. Finally, the option of repaying only the minimum amount can be tempting to those who may find it easy to use the credit card for other 'opportunities' or 'emergencies' during the time they are trying to repay their original purchases. Without a fixed term, borrowers can find themselves in a debt cycle which never seems to end. At times short term military loans -- even those with higher interest rates -- will be repaid sooner due to the stricter terms and the undesirable prospect of having to pay such a high rate for a long period of time.

Other options for short term military loans can be found in a variety of places. Debtors can attempt to work out a payment plan with their creditors. Free or low cost consumer agencies offer financial counseling and help with designing a budget or arranging payment plans. Creditors are usually willing to work with those who seem to be sincerely trying to repay their debts. In this way, the lender may recoup more than the amounts surrendered by collection agencies. However, be sure to contact the lender at the first sign of trouble instead of avoiding the situation. This will assure lenders of the sincerity of the borrower's intention to repay the debt, and ensures that they will be more willing to work with the situation. Many religious institutions, faith-based groups and community organizations are willing to provide assistance with a short term emergency. Loans may be obtained from family members, but care must be taken to avoid creating additional problems by this solution. Uncomfortable situations can develop which strain close relationships when owing money is involved. In fact, many people would rather deal with paying high interest than disclose their financial problems.

No-credit-check short term military loans, which are usually for a smaller amount of money ($500-1,000), may provide a temporary solution. Although the terms are short, and the interest may be high, it is one possible solution for an emergency. Whatever solution is chosen, be sure to read and understand all terms and interest rates. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another... warns Romans 13:8. For long term financial stability, some type of emergency savings should be accumulated. Even if only a small amount of money can be put aside at a time, this is a step in the right direction. Shoot for a small goal at first, such as saving $100. Later this can be increased to $500, then $1,000 and eventually to an amount equal to two or three month's pay. Setting aside unusual gains, such as tax rebates or re-enlistment bonuses, can help a person arrive at the goal of not having to rely on credit in times of emergency.

This month's cross workout with Smooth Fitness equipment!

    July 16th, 2013

Last month, Smooth Fitness introduced you to an intense full-body workout called cross training. This kind of home exercise can come in all shapes and sizes, but the gist of it is to challenge your body by incorporating all kinds of movements into a single workout. That means your cardio exercise is interrupted with spurts of strength training designed to burn more fat in less time. Sounds awesome, right?

It is, but it?s also going to kick your butt, especially if you?ve never attempted a cross workout before. So it?s best to ease into it! Here at Smooth Fitness, your #1 internet retailer of home fitness equipment, we?ve put together a beginner?s cross workout that will hopefully help introduce you to the wonderful world of cross training. Of course, one of the best parts is you don?t have to go to a gym to get all the benefits ? this workout can be completed with the fitness equipment you already have at home.

Remember, this is a full-body workout, which means you?re going to get full-body sore. But the more you challenge all your muscle groups, the stronger they?ll become ? and the more weight you?ll lose in the meantime. So gather up your Smooth fitness equipment and fitness accessories, and get ready for your first cross workout in the comfort of your own home!

    • To begin, put 30 minutes on the clock, prepare your Smooth treadmill and collect the following fitness accessories:
      • Resistance tubes
      • Pushup bars
      • Medicine ball
      • Warm up with some light stretching or walking on the treadmill.
      • Start the clock. During the first five minutes, complete as many rounds as possible of the following:
        • Five resistance tube pull-ups. Sit with your legs extended straight out in front of you, each hand grasping a handle of your resistance tube. Place the middle of the tube at the bottom of your feet, then pull both handles toward your armpits in a slow, rowing motion.
        • Ten pushup bar pushups. Complete ten pushups using your pushup bars. Using these fitness accessories will help alleviate pressure to your shoulder and wrist joints.
        • 15 medicine ball squats. Holding your medicine ball in front of your stomach, place your feet shoulder-width apart and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the ground (from the side, it should look like you are sitting in a chair). Make sure your knees do not pass the threshold of your toes, as this could cause pain and damage.
        • After the first five minutes, run on your Smooth treadmill for two and a half minutes at an mph that should qualify as about 70 percent of your maximum sprint speed. This will be tough, but it?s only a couple of minutes, so stay strong!
        • Repeat these two steps until the 30 minutes are up. You should end up with four 5-minute strength-training intervals, separated by four 2.5-minute treadmill intervals. Remember, there are no rest breaks in between, so make sure you make every second count!

Food poisoning kills at least 20 children in India

PATNA, India (Reuters) - At least 20 children died and dozens were taken to hospital with apparent food poisoning after eating a meal provided for free at their school in the Indian state of Bihar, the education minister said on Wednesday, sparking violent protests.

Police said the children, aged eight to 11, fell ill after consuming a lunch of rice, soybean and pulses on Tuesday. The school, in the district of Chapra, provided free meals under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, the world's largest school feeding program involving 120 million children.

Education minister M.M. Pallam Raju said a school cook had also died. The initial death toll of eight shot up to 20 on Wednesday.

The exact cause of the deaths will be known only after the postmortem examinations and food sample tests, doctors and state officials said.

"As soon as my boy returned from school, we rushed to the hospital with him. He was vomiting and he said his stomach was aching," said Raja Yadav, the father of one schoolboy.

Dozens of residents took to the streets in Chapra, pelting a police station with stones and setting ablaze buses and other vehicles, television channels showed.

"We are currently treating 27 children here," said R.K. Singh, medical superintendent at the children's hospital in the state capital, Patna. "Of them nine are in serious condition, 18 are stable."

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered an inquiry into the incident and has offered 200,000 rupees ($3,400) to the families of those who have died, the state's food minister said.

Bihar is one of the most impoverished states in India, according to government data.

Sumotext exec claims marketing trumps donations with SMS ...

    Two-way conversation

NEW YORK ? A Sumotext executive at Mobile Commerce Daily?s fourth annual Nonprofit Mobile Day said that nonprofits should focus on the marketing aspect of SMS instead of solely relying on the medium to collect donations.

The executive?s sponsored keynote session titled ?Messaging Technologies and Tactics for Nonprofits to Stay Relevant? discussed the ways that nonprofits are leveraging mobile through multiple different channels. In addition, the session gave attendees a few best-practice tools on how nonprofits can use mobile.

?When someone gives you money, that is not an opt-in,? said Tim Miller, CEO of Sumotext, Little Rock, AR.

?If your call-to-action says ?Text this to give,? then all you do is give,? he said.

?If you want to remarket to them to let them know about your next fundraiser, your next meeting, your next event, you need to get an opt-in. I say lead with marketing and then have the giving be behind that.?

Nonprofit Mobile Day, a conference owned by Mobile Commerce Daily parent Napean LLC, was co-presented with the Direct Marketing Association.

    Different missions
SMS is a constant tool for nonprofits to use to drive quick donation efforts around reliefs and ongoing efforts.

However, the differences between a mobile-giving short code and a marketing code are critical.

Indeed, marketers cannot use giving short codes for marketing messages to stay compliant with wireless carriers.

Mobile giving codes should be used strictly for fundraising efforts so that consumers know what to expect when they receive an SMS message.

Therefore, nonprofits need another short code to use as the backbone for marketing efforts.

Take the Christian sponsorship organization Heifer, for example. The nonprofit uses a mobile call-to-action to encourage consumers to opt-in to marketing messages.

Then once a consumer opts-in, she is sent a message to trigger a donation with all of the same information that is available on a giving call-to-action. The benefit to using the marketing opt-in in this case is that the nonprofit gets the opt-in from a consumer to create a stronger marketing program in the future.

    Heifer?s SMS program

?Mobile giving is not about raising money, it is about identifying donors,? Mr. Miller said. ?It?s acquisition, period.?

    Give on mobile
Text-to-give promotions are a staple for nonprofits for fundraising. However, organizations should look beyond basic SMS campaigns with new technologies to take messaging initiatives up a notch.

Take MMS, for example. MMS allows marketers to load messages with up to 5,000 characters versus the 160-character limit for SMS.

Nonprofits can also use MMS to incorporate audio, video and pictures to pack an emotional punch with donors via mobile.

According to Mr. Miller, MMS is the best channel into the mobile wallet.

From Apple?s Passbook to ISIS, there is a plethora of mobile wallets available nowadays. However, Passbook seems to be sticking with marketers right now and should be a channel with which nonprofits can experiment.

Star Star abbreviated dial codes are another way that nonprofits can leverage mobile to trigger consumers to take an action.

The codes can be used for both branding and action-driven marketing since they are location-aware and are easy for consumers to remember.

Then there is geo-fencing, which nonprofits can use to target groups of consumers conglomerated in a specific area.

    In best form
Mobile should begin with a strategy that includes business and customer goals, integration opportunities and technology opportunities.

The strategy then feeds a roadmap that marketers can use to plan, execute and measure mobile campaigns.

Similar to other industries, nonprofits should differentiate pull versus push messaging.

Messages should also be personalized and contextually-relevant to consumers.

?The idea is that instead of sending an offer, we get people in a way that is designed to collect data,? Mr. Miller said.
