Buckeyes rally after being booted from practice

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Ohio State coach Thad Matta had seen enough, so he called off practice.

Senior William Buford wouldn't let them quit. We're sticking around, finishing this ? with or without coach.

"We needed to stay together and show coach that we really wanted to be here," Buford said on Thursday.

They sure did.

Sparked by that we'll-show-coach moment of solidarity and buoyed by a refresher-course team meeting, the Buckeyes have made an unexpected run into the Final Four.

Following a loss to Wisconsin the day after Matta's outburst, Ohio State (31-7) has won eight of nine games and is playing its best basketball at just the right time.

The young Buckeyes face Kansas in Saturday's Final Four matchup in the Big Easy and have found the confidence that was missing during an ugly stretch in February that had Matta wondering if his team could even get past the first round of the NCAA tournament.

"There was a lot of finger-pointing going around. There was some adversity; we weren't playing as well as we thought we should be," point guard Aaron Craft said. "There were guys just not taking responsibility for their actions, and he tried to kick us out. I think we did a good job of fighting back. Since the last week of the season, it's been a better team mind-set, and we've dealt with adversity a lot better."

The Buckeyes opened the season with some decent expectations thanks to Jared Sullinger's decision to return for his sophomore season. Still, they were young and inexperienced, with 11 underclassmen on the roster, leaving Matta unsure of where the team was headed.

Ohio State was a smooth-shifting machine early in the season, playing with poise and efficiency while getting scoring from Sullinger and Buford and steady play from Craft at the point.

Ohio State's only losses were on the road to Kansas ? without Sullinger ? Indiana and Illinois, and it had moved up to third in the rankings.

Then, the Buckeyes seemed to get discombobulated.

Sullinger started complaining about the way officials were calling games and seemed bothered by teams playing physical defense. The entire team became more selfish, sometimes not even knowing what play was being run or where to be on the court.

In position to take a two-game lead in the Big Ten with six left on Feb. 11, the Buckeyes labored in a 58-48 loss to Michigan State, shooting 26 percent while scoring 29 points below their average to see a 39-game home winning streak end.

The Buckeyes bounced back with a road win against Minnesota, but followed with a 56-51 loss at Michigan and still seemed to be in a funk despite beating Illinois.

Facing a huge game against Wisconsin the next day, one that could determine the Big Ten championship, the Buckeyes should have been focused and ready for an intense practice on Feb. 25.

Instead, they labored through it, prompting their coach to blow his stack and tell them to go home.

It was a big risk with a crucial game the next day, but Matta couldn't sit around and watch his team fritter away what he thought could be a good season.

"We've always tried to set the stage of how we practice is how we play ? at high speed, we don't stop. It takes guys a little longer to get the intensity and what we're trying to get," Matta said. "And it took this team took a little while to understand."

The Buckeyes stumbled after Matta's gamble, losing to Wisconsin 63-60 the next day. They rallied after that, though.

Sullinger, who had just eight points and six rebounds against Wisconsin, shook off his midseason funk and concentrated just on his game, not outside influences like officials or what people were saying about him.

Deshaun Thomas, Ohio State's second-leading scorer in the regular season, picked up his output in the NCAA tournament, leading the Buckeyes with 21.8 points per game while giving the Buckeyes' a tough, who-do-you-stop combination with Sullinger.

Overall, the Buckeyes played more as a team, regained some of their early season swagger and found a way to deal with adversity when it comes up instead of backing down from it.

"Even though we lost the game the next day, maybe it opened their eyes to maybe what the coaches are telling us is true, that the way we play games is the way we practice," Matta said. "Unfortunately, we had to take a home loss for it, but maybe it helped us in the end."

The Buckeyes got an opportunity to show how far they had come after a win over Loyola of Maryland to open the NCAA tournament.

Ohio State rolled to a 19-point victory, but it was chalked up to the Buckeyes being bigger, faster and stronger than Loyola, not because the team was playing well.

The players, fortified with their new sense of purpose, had that it-could-have-been-better feeling, too, so they decided to hold a team meeting before their next game against Gonzaga.

Gathered in a Pittsburgh hotel room, they talked about focus, not taking anything for granted, communicating better, playing more as a team instead of individuals ? a players-led refresher course of many of the same things Matta stressed after his get-out-of-my-sight move.

The players' meeting only lasted 10 minutes or so, but, like their coach's practice toss, the message made it through.

The next day, Ohio State fought through Sullinger's early foul trouble for a 73-66 victory over Gonzaga, earning a trip to the East Regional in Boston.

Once there, the Buckeyes held their composure after blowing a 12-point lead against cross-state rival Cincinnati, then knocked off top-seeded Syracuse to reach the Final Four for the second time since 2007, when Greg Oden led them to the national title game.

"We knew we had a chance to do something special, so we just wanted to try to keep our guys together," Buford said of the meeting. "We let everybody know that we need each other and that we needed to keep uplifting each other and help each other out."

Their season once on the brink of collapse, the Buckeyes are two wins from their first national championship in 52 years.

Why James Cameron was forced to surface early

James Cameron described the Mariana Trench as "very lunar, a very desolate place, very isolated.? His six hour trip was cut in half by hydraulic problems.

"Titanic" film director James Cameron? has completed the world's first solo dive to the deepest-known point on Earth, reaching the bottom of the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench southwest of Guam in a specially designed submarine.

Cameron planned to stay as long as six hours but a hydraulic leak forced the mission to be cut short.

"I lost hydraulics toward the latter part of dive, and I was unable to use the manipulator arm," Cameron said Monday morning during a post-dive press conference held aboard the Octopus, a yacht owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, according to National Geographic.

The filmmaker arrived at the site known as "Challenger Deep" shortly before 8 a.m. local time on Monday (6 p.m. Sunday E.T.), reaching a depth of 35,756 feet, or roughly 7 miles beneath the ocean's surface, said the National Geographic Society, which is overseeing the expedition.

IN PICTURES: the 20 weirdest fish

Cameron's first words to the surface on reaching the bottom following a descent that took two hours and 36 minutes were "All systems OK," National Geographic said on its website.

"Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you," the 57-year-old filmmaker said in a separate Twitter message posted just after he touched down.

The low point of the Mariana Trench, a great canyon below the Pacific, has been reached by humans just once before, in 1960 when U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and the late Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard spent 20 minutes there in the submersible craft Trieste.

Cameron, the first person to make a solo dive to the spot, spent about three hours on the bottom collecting research samples for marine biology, geology and geophysics and taking still photographs and video footage of the trench.

After a faster-than-expected 70-minute return ascent, he safely reached the surface at noon local time Monday (10 p.m. Sunday ET) about 300 miles southwest of the U.S. territory of Guam in the western Pacific, National Geographic said in a press statement.

In a press conference Monday, Cameron described the bottom of the the trench as "very lunar, a very desolate place, very isolated.?

The expedition was a joint project by Cameron, National Geographic and watchmaker Rolex that has been dubbed "Deepsea Challenge" and was designed to expand understanding of a little-known corner of the Earth.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, is the project's principal science collaborator.

The single-man vehicle piloted by Cameron, the Deepsea Challenger, stands 24 feet tall and was designed to descend upright and rotating at a speed of about 500 feet per minute.

The submersible represents breakthroughs in materials science, structural engineering and imaging through an ultra-small, full-ocean depth-rated stereoscopic camera.

While he is perhaps better known as director of such films as "Titanic," "Avatar" and "Aliens,"?Cameron is no stranger to underwater exploration. For "Titanic," he took 12 dives to the famed shipwreck in the North Atlantic, leading him to develop deep-sea film and exploration technology.

He has since led six expeditions, authored a forensic study of the German battleship Bismarck wreck site and conducted extensive 3-D imaging of deep hydrothermal vents along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the East Pacific Rise and the Sea of Cortez.

The Deepsea Challenge expedition was chronicled for a 3-D feature film set for theatrical release and for subsequent broadcast on the National Geographic Channel.

Scripps oceanographer Lisa Levin said the project's potential for generating public interest in deep-ocean science was as important as any new species that Cameron might have discovered.

"I consider Cameron to be doing for the trenches what (French undersea explorer) Jacques Cousteau did for the ocean many decades ago," she told the National Geographic Daily News website.

Idan Ginsburg, a graduate student in Dartmouth's Department of Physics and Astronomy, studies some of the fastest moving objects in the cosmos. When stars and their orbiting plants wander too close to the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, their encounter with the black hole's gravitational force can either capture them or eject them from the galaxy, like a slingshot, at millions of miles per hour.

Although their origin remains a mystery and although they are invisible, black holes found at galaxy centers make their presence known through the effects they have on their celestial surroundings. The Milky Way's black hole, a monster with a mass four million times that of the Sun, feeds on some of its neighbors and thrusts others out into the intergalactic void.

It's the expelled objects that "become hypervelocity planets and stars," say Ginsburg. "What we learn from these high-speed travelers has significance for our understanding of planetary formation and evolution near the central black hole."

Ginsburg, along with his doctoral adviser Professor Gary Wegner, and Harvard Professor Abraham Loeb are publishing a paper in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. It describes how the team constructed computer simulations of these hypervelocity bodies as a means to understanding the dynamics involved. "The paper is a 'call to arms' for other astronomers to join the search," Ginsburg announces.

Born in Israel, Ginsburg came to the United States as a child and grew up as a Midwesterner. After high school in Lawrence, Kan., graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and studies at Harvard, Ginsburg came to Dartmouth almost five years ago.

For the origin of hypervelocity bodies, Ginsburg and his colleagues point to the close interaction of a binary star systemtwo stars orbiting a common centerwith a massive black hole. The likely scenario is the black hole draws one of the pair into its gravitational well while simultaneously ejecting the other at 1.5 million miles per hour. More than 20 of these hypervelocity stars have been identified in the Milky Way.

"You can also have a lone hypervelocity planet, peeled away from its star and ejected from the black hole. The same mechanism that produces a hypervelocity star produces a hypervelocity planet," Ginsburg explains. "But because it is so small and traveling up to 30 million miles per hour, it cannot be seen. That doesn't mean they won't eventually be found, but currently it is beyond the limitations of our technology."

Ginsburg contends, however, that you could see a hypervelocity star ejected with planets still in tow. In this case, you might be able to see the planets as they cross in front of the star like an eclipse, appearing as a dip in its light curve. While the paper discusses the lone hypervelocity planets, it also draws attention to the planets rotating around the hypervelocity stars.

"That is something that we can detect now," Ginsburg says, "which I think makes it very interesting. As of yet nobody has looked for these planets transiting hypervelocity stars. We are telling people in this paper that you should look for these."

In Baghdad's scars, a warning to Arab leaders

BAGHDAD (AP) ? The eerie quiet enveloping the road from the airport to the Saddam Hussein-era palace where Arab leaders will meet this week cannot conceal Baghdad's grim realities. Behind the freshly planted palm trees and lawns are concrete walls closing off nearby neighborhoods and troops in full combat gear deployed to prevent any attacks.

For Arab leaders who seek military intervention in Syria, the Iraqi capital provides a cautionary tale, with violence and sectarian hatreds persisting nearly a decade after the U.S. invasion.

Gulf Arab nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have been pushing behind the scenes for more assertive action to end the year-old conflict in Syria. Privately, they see little benefit in the Arab League's efforts to reach a peaceful settlement and prefer instead to see a small core of nations pooling together to act on their own.

Among the options they are considering are arming the rebels and creating a safe haven for the opposition alongside the Turkish-Syrian border to serve as a humanitarian sphere or staging ground for anti-regime forces.

The summit, gathering the members of the 22-nation Arab League, is likely to take a less dramatic step, issuing a condemnation of civilian deaths in Syria's crackdown on the uprising and a call for President Bashar Assad to stop all violence and allow street protests.

But Gulf nations apparently believe Assad won't abide by those demands and that, if he defies the League, they will have diplomatic cover to take stronger action. Their bullish approach has its roots in their hopes that by forcing Assad's fall they can pull Sunni-majority Syria out of its alliance with Iran and break the belt of Tehran's influence that stretches through Iraq and Syria to the Mediterranean. Like Iraq, Syria has its own dangerous sectarian divide, between the majority Sunnis who largely back the opposition, and the Alawite minority, a Shiite offshoot that dominates power.

A Sunni-ruled Syria would give the U.S.-allied Gulf Arabs a significant victory in their long-running power struggle with non-Arab, mainly Shiite Iran.

But that prospect worries Iraq, with its sectarian divides between a Shiite majority that now holds power and a Sunni minority that resents its sidelining.

"A Sunni regime in Damascus will encourage Iraq's Sunni provinces to push for autonomy and maybe even secession," warned Iraqi political analayst Hassan Kamil. "That will in turn add more problems for Iraqi Shiites and draw more Iranian and Saudi interference in Iraq's affairs."

Hosting an Arab summit that demands Assad stop violence places Iraq in a delicate position, because of the Baghdad government's close ties to Iran. The preliminary meetings began Tuesday, and the leaders arrive for their summit Thursday.

On the other hand, hosting the summit gives its guests an opportunity to see first hand what foreign military intervention can do to a nation.

The 14-mile (20-kilometer) stretch of road linking the airport to the city is about all the Arab leaders will see in Baghdad when they jet in for their one-day summit. It is where Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government spent a big chunk of the $500 million it has splashed on sprucing up the city for the occasion.

The six neighborhoods alongside the road ? al-Furat, al-Jihad, al-Amel, al-Amriyah, al-Qadissiyah and al-Yarmouk ? remain walled off nearly five years after sectarian violence peaked in 2006-2007. They are majority Sunni areas, serving as strongholds for extremists who waged an insurgency against U.S. forces and their Shiite allies after the U.S.-led invasion. The neighborhoods bore the brunt of near continuous crackdowns by Iraqi security forces and attacks blamed on Shiite militiamen.

That the walls remain in place to this day is testimony to the persistent security concerns as well as the distrust between the newly empowered Shiites and the once-powerful Sunni minority.

The sectarian strife has eased since its near-civil war heights. But there is a constant fear another bout may not be far off, given occasional attacks targeting Shiites, flareups between politicians from the two sides and a growing desire among Sunni provinces to gain autonomy.

"War breeds war," said Hassan Raheem al-Saadi, a 43-year-old owner of a cosmetics store in Baghdad's Karradah district. "We still fear going out on the streets and we are worried when we do that we may never return home," said al-Saadi, a Shiite father of two who insists he only offers credit to fellow Shiites and vows never to allow his sisters to marry Sunnis.

Sunni militants continue to show muscle. Last week, they staged near simultaneous attacks on eight cities that killed 46 and wounded more than 200. They also feel confident enough to intimidate residents into paying protection money in some Sunni areas, like Mosul, Iraq's third largest city.

The owner of an aluminum factory there says he pays up to $300 every month to armed militants. Failure to pay, he claims, can mean forced closure of his business or death.

"It seems like we are living in a country run by the mafia," said the businessman, who refused to give his name because he feared reprisals. "We don't know who's running the country. Is it the government or al-Qaida?"

In Baghdad, away from the airport and the summit venue on the west bank of the Tigris River, concrete barriers surround government buildings, hospitals and schools. Iraqi security forces continue to conduct door-to-door searches across most of the city. According to the U.N. refugee agency, more than 1.3 million Iraqis remain internally displaced until today, unable or unwilling to return to their areas of origin because of sectarian tensions.

Services in this potentially oil-rich nation remain erratic at best, with most of the population relying on private power generators for electricty. Many neighborhoods have sewage running in open canals in the street and seeping into drinking water.

Because of fears of violence, al-Maliki's government sets aside heavy resources ? nearly $15.5 billion this year, around 15 percent of the entire budget ? for security and defense.

Iraq has been keen to host the summit in part to show the world it has emerged from its years of turmoil and to ease its way back to an Arab world that has been wary of its close ties with Iran.

Still, Baghdad does not want to hurt its relationship with Iran, a major source of economic aid.

"Again, al-Maliki is performing a balance act here: keeping economic support to Assad's regime while respecting Arab League resolutions on Syria," said political scientist Kadhum al-Muqdadi.

The Laws Of Attraction And The Subconscious Mind

The human mind is made up of the subconscious unconscious mind and the normal conscious. With normal consciousness, the person is aware of what they are doing. With the subconscious, the person is not aware of what they are doing. It is the source of creativity and destructiveness. Influences of the subconscious mind can be translated into personal beliefs and attitudes. Many people do not understand the importance of the subconscious mind and how it controls their lives.

The Laws of Attraction work with the subconscious or unconscious mind and the conscious mind. If a person has a limited belief in their subconscious, it can keep them from attracting the things that they want in their life. This will dampen their success and keep them from getting what they want. People who are successful with getting the things that they want in life are able to overcome limiting beliefs and negative thoughts. One way to do this is to use mindpower to focus on positive things.

A person can make the decision to become in control of their thoughts so that they can use the laws of attraction to manifest their desires. They can use focus and visualization to influence what is happening with their subconscious. If this is done often enough, there will be a change with the unconscious mind. A person?s internal belief system will be changed. This is when a person will begin to see how the positive ways the laws of attraction can change their lives.

The subconscious mind is the real key to the laws of attraction. Some people have a little bit of success because they do not get rid of their limiting beliefs. They may not realize that they have these beliefs or they may not want to admit that they have them. Some ways that this can be addressed involves: subliminal messaging, hypnosis, or visualization, and meditation. All of them are techniques that can be used to communicate with the subconscious and change the messages that are replayed there. Meditation may be one of the best techniques that can be used in order for a person to figure out the negative thoughts and beliefs that are holding them back from their desires.
