An Interview with FranNet ... - Starting a New Business Advice Blog

Vic Scimo

In the 1990s, Vic Scimo was top dog at a highly successful specialty restaurant company that brought in millions. He may have owned a small empire, but he felt like something was missing. He had a nagging desire to reach out and help other business owners.

Scimo bought his Los Angeles area FranNet franchise in 2000 and has never looked back. ?I found my calling,? Scimo says. ?It?s great to help others succeed with franchising business models that are structured for success.?

Now in his second decade of coaching and consulting, Scimo has helped clients open over 150 new franchise locations. Here?s what just one of those happy clients says:
?Thanks to Vic?s expertise, I can now say I?ve joined the ranks of those people who?ve had their dreams of business ownership fulfilled,? says client Van Casaneda. ?I?m finally on the road to making myself wealthy instead of my employer.?

Q: What is your professional background?
A: I was with Marriott for 12 years on the business contract side. I decided to start another company because I saw a need in the market for a food service provider for colleges and universities. I sold my share of that company, Bon Appetite Management, in 2000. We had become very successful; when I left we had $90 million in revenue. I woke up one day and realized I didn?t want to deal with the stress and the traveling anymore. There?s more to life than money. I was ready for something new.

Q: How long have you been a FranNet consultant, and how did you decide to get into this kind of business?

A: I learned of FranNet in 2000 from a friend. I fell in love with it. It offers a way for me to use my business knowledge and really help people in the process. It?s a service that really gives people a leg up. It?s great to know that you can really help clients reach goals and see them grow. I love that we are able to offer clients so many choices of quality, premiere companies. I now see my work with FranNet as my calling.

Q: Can you give a couple of examples of your success stories?
A: Many of my clients have had transformations. Often when they come to me they don?t really know what they want. I try to help and coach them through the fears and doubts. Here are a couple of examples: I worked with a former female executive who had been laid off from Mattel. Through the coaching process we were able to identify some of her new goals. She felt it was time to get back to the community to make a difference. ?She purchased an educational tutoring franchise and was successful from the beginning. She was named Rookie of the Year in her company and is really pleased with her decision to become a franchise owner.

Another example is a high level CEO I worked with two years ago who didn?t feel like he could quit his job, but wanted to put something in place for his wife and perhaps himself for the future. They purchased a staffing business. She was scared to death but stepped up to the plate and has done a great job. They hit a home run. He has already joined her in the business.

Q: Did you know much about franchising when you started?
A: I knew about franchising in a general way. You don?t have to know a lot about it in the beginning. You can pick up the technical things you need to know as you go along. I didn?t know how many choices there are in franchising. That, of course, is one of the greatest things about franchising. It?s so much more than fast food and retail.

Q: Do people have preconceptions? How do you educate them about the diversity?
A: We try to define those things and work through them in our own workshops. We show participants the franchising world that goes beyond food options. We educate about how franchising lowers the risk of business failure ? and dramatically. There?s also an educational process involved in finding the right business match. It?s all a process.

Q: Who makes a successful franchisee?
A: You need a passion for business and a desire to be successful. ?It helps to have an entrepreneurial spirit, but at the same time you need to be willing to follow a system designed by someone else and trust in it. Of course, it?s important to find a franchise that?s a good fit.

Q: What are the benefits of franchise ownership?
A: It minimizes the risk of failure because you have a partner who?s made the big mistakes already. You get help with marketing, accounting and operations. You avoid having to create everything from scratch. It?s like getting a business in a box. So much of the legwork is done for you. There?s also the aspect of independence and financial freedom. You have so much more control than a typical corporate job brings.

Q: At what price point do most people buy into franchising? What investment range seems to be the most popular?
A: About $225,000 for retail and $125,000 for service businesses. Five years to 10 years ago.

Q: How has your 2011 gone, compared to 2010?
A: 2010 was my busiest year in since I started. ?This year is a little slower because of uncertainty in the business world, but it?s still a very good year.

Thieves steal $2.8 million in jewelry store heist

(AP) ? Two men who police say cut their way through concrete walls to make off with more than $2.8 million worth of jewelry were arrested on Wednesday.

The men bypassed the security system at Milano's Fine Jewelry in Cumming, just north of Atlanta, and made a hole in the wall from an empty building next store, authorities said.

Carl Henry Bowser, 26, of Atlanta and Kenardis Demaine Holloway, 32, of Smyrna, are charged with burglary and theft by receiving stolen property, said Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton.

The break-in was discovered Monday morning and owner Ibrahim Ehicam said the thieves emptied his store's display cases and stole the cash register. A few rings were found near a fence behind the building.

"There was dust all over and I didn't see any merchandise inside the store," he said.

More arrests could be coming and officers expect to recover more loot in Atlanta, Paxton said.

Sheriff's Capt. Tim House told WSB-TV the theft is one of the largest he's seen in his 25 years of experience.

Ellen DeGeneres is "fine" after chest pain scare (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres called paramedics on Monday after feeling pains and tightness in her chest, but jokingly brushed off the incident, saying she had a "baboon heart" and admitting she wasn't sure what caused the discomfort.

"Everything is fine. I don't know what it is but it's fine," DeGeneres told her TV audience, hours after getting checked out. Her remarks were taped on Monday and will be broadcast on Tuesday's "The Ellen DeGeneres Show".

Rumors over the health of the comedian flew around the Internet on Monday after celebrity website TMZ.com said that paramedics had been called to the studio near Los Angeles where DeGeneres tapes her show after she complained of chest pains. She was not hospitalized.

DeGeneres, 53, one of the most popular stand-up comics and hosts on U.S. television, said she had woken up in the middle of the night.

"I was feeling like a tightness of my chest and all the scary things ... like something was heavy on my chest and it was a cat so I moved it. I still felt the tightness and heaviness so there was another cat under that cat. There were two cats on my chest," she told her studio audience.

"Then I got to work and it was still happening. I was still feeling the pains. So I was like, 'ya know, I should check this out.' It's better to be safe than sorry. Who doesn't want to see a fireman occasionally?," she said.

DeGeneres said paramedics bombarded her with questions, and she thanked "all the paramedics and nurses who showed up and everybody and TMZ for caring so much."

"Let me just say I am fine," she added.

Two Hobbits square off in boxing ring

One boxing ring to rule them all.

Fans who attended the annual Fantastic Fest in Austin, Tex., described as the largest genre film festival in the U.S., were treated to a precious Main Event: a boxing match between ?Lord of the Rings? co-stars Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood.

We?re not kidding.

The two former Hobbits laced up pink gloves and slugged it out in front of a crowed of bloodthirsty and deliriously geeked-out fans. If you doubt how seriously Frodo and Merry took things, check out the video. Those are legitimate Hobbit haymakers being thrown.

So why were they fighting? Could it have been lingering resentment on Monaghan?s part over Wood getting all the glory ? and the ring ? in "LOTR"? Nope, it turns out the two actors were doing their part in a Fantastic Fest tradition, the Fantastic Debates.

That?s where filmmakers, actors and members of the press face off and do what Fanboys do best: Argue about anything and everything pop culture.

Wood, who?s currently starring in FX?s hit show ?Wilfred,? and Monaghan, currently on the web series ?Goodnight Burbank? and eternally known as Charlie from ?Lost,? squared off in a passionate debate over the video game franchise ?World of Warcraft.?

Tempers flared at that point, as Monaghan dropped some major WoW knowledge on his opponent. But Wood showed no respect for the mega-popular video game, calling it ?a complete waste of time.? He then riled up the Warcraft crowd by proclaiming the "Legend of Zelda" series was enough fantasy gaming for him.

The trash talking seemed to inspire Monaghan. He pummeled Wood throughout the match, even opening a cut below Wood?s eye (of the Tiger?). The fight was about as coordinated a fight as you would expect from two guys best known for movies in which they wore hairy, prosthetic feet. The fans didn?t seem to mind. What they lacked in finesse, style and skill, they made up in sheer unintentional hilarity.

The Fantastic Debates were sponsored by ?Knuckle,? a documentary about bare-knuckle boxing which hits theaters in December.

Judging by the results of their gloved showdown, it?s fortunate the two actors didn?t mimic the film?s bare-knuckle style, or things could have gotten really ugly. We think Wood learned a valuable lesson: Mock ?World of Warcraft? at your peril.

Debate likely dents Perry's cash this quarter (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Rick Perry's lackluster performance in the last Republican presidential debate will likely dent his fundraising this quarter, backers said, despite their confidence a week ago that he might surpass Mitt Romney.

The Texas governor shot to the top of national polls when he entered the 2012 presidential race last month, but his star diminished somewhat after what some called confusing statements at last week's Republican debate in Florida.

The final weeks in a fundraising period are often the most crucial, fundraisers said. The third quarter ends Friday September 30, and it will be the first time Perry reports. All the candidates including the man to beat, Democratic President Barack Obama, are on a fundraising blitz in the final weeks.

"Money follows momentum. When you have negative momentum it always impacts your fundraising negatively," said Matt Mackowiak, who is one of the fundraising hosts for Perry at a posh Washington hotel on Tuesday evening.

Romney, Perry's chief rival for the Republican nomination to oppose Obama in his re-election bid next year, will raise money in Washington this week as well.

Not in Washington is Obama, who is on a West Coast campaign swing that has raised millions from Seattle to San Diego.

The Perry camp had an internal goal of raising about $10 million for the third quarter. Many expect he will still reach that benchmark, but expectations have faded since late last week that Perry could substantially surpass it and overtake the former Massachusetts governor in the money race.

Romney raised $18 million in the last quarter, before Perry launched his presidential campaign, which was more than all of his Republican rivals combined.

"I would imagine some people who might have been ready to come (to Perry) are probably still sitting on the sidelines," because of the debate, said Henry Barbour, who raised money for Republican John McCain's 2008 presidential bid and is now collecting for Perry.

"It is a bump in the road," Barbour said.

At the same time, backers said the blip could be temporary and noted Perry still leads national polls, including a CNN poll that came out after the debate showing Perry leading Romney by 7 percentage points.

"There are so many things that have an impact," another Perry fundraiser said. "The debate has an impact - that doesn't mean it is something that is mind-changing. It might mean more people watch the next debate to see how people perform."

The third quarter is traditionally a weak fundraising period, with many people on summer vacation.

Not all agreed the debate would move the needle substantively.

"I think people chew over these debates as if they are some sort of holy grail as to whether or not people are electable," said Chris Healy, a former Republican Party chairman from Connecticut.

Still, he said that given Perry's late entry, "he doesn't have the luxury of setbacks."

In Colombia, Violent Protests Threaten an Oil Boom (Time.com)

At first, Pacific Rubiales Energy had the magic touch in Colombia. Forty-two of its first 48 exploratory wells struck oil - an almost unheard of success rate. The Toronto-based firm, whose Colombian operations are run by exiled Venezuelan oilmen, now pumps nearly one-quarter of the country's present crude production of 953,000 barrels per day, and it's the main driver behind a boom that may well see the country reach 1 million barrels per day by the end of the year.

But this week, violent protests at the massive Rubiales and Quifa fields in the southern state of Meta completely halted Pacific Rubiales' production. Disgruntled oil workers and local residents blocked roads, cut electricity lines and burned backhoes and dump trucks, forcing the company to evacuate some of its personnel by helicopter. "This is not a labor protest," complained company executive director Camilo Valencia. "This is a hostile takeover of our installations." (See why land reform could end Colombia's guerrilla war.)

Valencia may be partly right. Though the protesters have legitimate beefs about wages and benefits, government officials suspect that guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, may have infiltrated the demonstrations. Either way, the production stoppage of 225,000 barrels per day has also disrupted the upbeat meme about Colombia overcoming security issues and other problems to become a safe, business-friendly alternative to oil-rich Venezuela. "Oil companies are quite concerned" about the troubles in Colombia, said Heather Berkman, a Latin America analyst at the Eurasia Group in New York City. "It's definitely had a ripple effect in the investment community."

It's hard to say how big that ripple will be. On Thursday, Sept. 22, Pacific Rubiales announced it had reached a temporary accord with the protesters and said production would return to normal next week. What's more, Colombia is no longer the near failed state where marauding guerrillas, paramilitaries and drug traffickers put huge chunks of the national territory off limits to oil exploration. In the past decade, a U.S.-backed military offensive has reduced guerrilla forces by more than half. And while Venezuela and other big producers in the region have changed investment laws and royalty rates to give their governments a greater share of oil profits, Colombia by contrast has reduced royalty rates and allowed foreign companies to own 100% stakes in oil ventures - incentives that opened the door to newcomers like Pacific Rubiales. (See why FARC won't die.)

Still, the oil boom has provoked numerous protests over labor and social and environmental concerns - sensitive issues in a country where there have been so many murders of union leaders, for example, that the U.S. recently demanded labor reforms as a condition for ratifying a bilateral free-trade pact. At the same time, the influx of foreign companies has provided soft and easy targets for FARC, which still has about 8,000 fighters, many of whom operate in oil-producing southern states like Meta and Caquet?. In June three Chinese oil workers and their translator, working for U.K.-based Emerald Energy, were kidnapped by FARC rebels in Caquet?. In August FARC set fire to numerous oil-tanker trucks and activated a roadside bomb in Caquet?, killing one oil worker and wounding six others. Police officials recently claimed that at least three petroleum companies in Caquet? had been paying extortion money to FARC, and that the attacks began when those payments were stopped.

In fact, a nationwide increase in rebel attacks and crime prompted the Aug. 31 resignation of Colombian Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera. It also persuaded President Juan Manuel Santos to station more police and army troops along vulnerable highways in oil-producing areas. "The growth in oil exploration has been dizzying," Santos said last month. "The area of the country under exploration has jumped from 8 million to 38 million hectares [20 million to 94 million acres]. That requires the presence of the armed forces. Oil companies are asking for this protection."

Amid the bonanza, oil firms are also being asked to do more. Most of Pacific Rubiales' workforce is employed by contractors and subcontractors, and workers insist that these companies are failing to comply with Colombian laws regarding salaries and benefits. That's what sparked this week's disturbances as well as a July protest at Pacific Rubiales installations that also briefly shut down production. The Ministry of Social Protection announced this week that it has opened 40 investigations into labor conditions for oil workers in Meta state. (See photos in the jungle with FARC.)

It's not just oil workers who are angry. People in Puerto Gait?n, an oil boomtown located near the production sites, are pressuring Pacific Rubiales to do more for their community, like buying local products and hiring local residents. "When they have oil running underneath them," says Meta governor Dar?o V?squez, "the people believe they have acquired new rights."

But some wonder who "the people" really are in certain cases. According to Pacific Rubiales and government officials, this week's demonstrations may have been inflated by FARC infiltrators - though it's often been a convenient excuse for officials and executives in Colombia to peg demonstrators as traitors. Oil companies also contend that while they're already paying out huge sums in taxes and royalties, politicians have sometimes squandered the riches. While petrodollars and huge growth in the mining sector have helped fuel Colombia's robust economic growth over the past five years, many towns and villages around production sites remain mired in poverty. One example is the oil-rich state of Arauca, where officials wasted millions on grandiose projects like an Olympic-size velodrome and a water park with a wave pool. Annual royalties to Puerto Gait?n's city government have jumped from chump change to about $50 million - yet 44% of the population lives in poverty and running water is available for just a few hours a day.

For now, peace has been restored in Meta and Pacific Rubiales will soon be back to pumping its 225,000 barrels per day. But Rodrigo Vecino, a leader of the USO, or Colombian Oil Workers' Union, warns that unless the companies become more responsive to local residents, labor strife "will be constant."

The science of romance reveals no drug is as potent as the chemicals produced in encounters between partners in a love relationship, and, according to recent findings in neoroscience, with all the dopamine and oxytocin that fantasies and yearnings for connection dump into the bloodstream, nothing else can drive otherwise ?normal? people to do crazy things.

What can we extract from this that is positive?

Your couple relationship is a top-notch school, nature?s plan, so to speak, to ?help? you balance your inborn strivings, stretch to love courageously with your whole heart, and grow in wisdom and conscious awareness ? all in one.

For these and other reasons, the anniversary of your relationship deserves a beautiful celebration. Of course, there are the traditional flowers, dinner, candlelight, reciting or renewing your wedding vows, or exciting getaways.

To ensure you connect to the heart of what brings meaning to a lifelong relationship, consider adding one or more of the following five ways to celebrate, alongside your favorites:

1.?Bring to mind the first steps ??

? of your life together. Life consists of a series of milestones. There are fresh starts around every corner. Ponder the firsts. The first meeting. When you first ?knew? your partner was ?the one.? Putting together a home. Becoming parents. Replay these memories.

2.?Recollect a life of growing together ?

? with the challenges you faced. Every year unfolds a unique mix of ups and downs, fresh revelations, novel challenges, and unique resolutions. Remember the times you stood by each other. How you resolved conflict. Reflect on how your growth, as individuals, strengthened your relationship. Reiterate the stories.

3.?Honor the friendship ??

? at the heart of your relationship. What is unique about friendship? Fun! Life is too serious to take too seriously! Fun protects your relationship from the natural wear and tear of daily living. Life is replete with challenges. They?re there to grow us. Never wait to have fun, however. Find joy and ways to appreciate and enjoy one another. Laugh a lot. Get cuddly. Hold hands. Look into each other?s eyes. Make it a regular.

4.?Ponder the lessons learned ?

? together through the years. Relish the gift of what brought you together, as life partners, on this journey called life. Get comfortable with challenges, their customized to optimally grow you. The practice of forgiveness. The choice in how you communicate. The importance of working together as partners. Balancing your giving and receiving. Keep the lessons close to your heart.

5.?Renew your commitment ?

? to one another. A vibrant couple relationship consists of a lifetime of ?I do?s? and not ?I already have?s.? Commitment is choice to nurture the health of your relationship with your self and your partner, especially, in moments when one of both of you seem ?unlovable.?? Be proud of what you have together. No matter how busy life is, make time to assure one another of your commitment to each other?s well being, and to create togetherness moments for a lifetime.

Imagine the possibilities ?

? of what is to come in a future radiant with hope, love and belief in one another and your relationship.

Connecting with your eyes and touch, and affectionately engaging your minds and hearts, are not only romantic. These practices release oxytocin, a hormone known as the ?safety and love? tonic.?Once associated with bonding between mother and child, the release of this hormone inclines you to further connect. In other words, the more you celebrate your love, the more you want to.

In this vast universe, you found one another, and decided to spend the rest of your life together. Make a conscious choice to treat one another as you want to be treated ? ?for a lifetime of present moments.

Notably, oxytocin also nourishes the cells of the brain and body with health. Another reason to celebrate.

Savor what you have on your anniversary and every day of your life together.

Congratulations!

How to Make Recipe Cards in Photoshop | Home Cooking ...

I love to document recipes on digital recipe cards. Once you create a recipe card digitally, you can either fill it in on your computer or you can print the card and fill in the recipe by hand. You can also use the card over and over again, just changing out the recipe to create each new card.

There are many different ways of creating your own recipe cards in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. My favorite way is by using digital recipe card templates and digital scrapbooking supplies. With templates, most of the design is already done for you and all you have to do is use clipping mask to apply digital scrapbooking papers or your paint bucket to fill with color. But for this tutorial, I wanted to give you some very basic instructions on making your own recipe cards in Photoshop ? from scratch.

Note: I created this tutorial in Photoshop, but most (and possibly all) steps can be done in Photoshop Elements too.

The first step is to create a new document. To do this, go to the top menu bar and click on FILE and then NEW.

A new dialog window will open that will allow you to enter the size of the recipe card you would like to create. Two most common size of recipe cards are 3?5? and 4?6?. You could create one of these sizes or another size, if you wish. I like to create my cards at 4?6?, so in the new dialog window, I added the numbers to created a new document sized 6? wide and 4? high. I set the resolution at 300 pixels per inch because I will be printing my recipe card and this is what I recommend for recipe cards that you will be printing. If you will only be using and viewing your card online, you could make your resolution 72 pixels per inch. I have a white background, but you could have a transparent background or any other color (it doesn?t matter right now which color you choose).

After entering all the information you are happy with it, click OK.

Now you have your new document window sized in the dimensions you set. Next, create a new layer to work on. To do this, go to your layers palette and click on the little icon that when you hover over, it will say ?Create New Layer?. In the image below you will see where it is. See the blue highlighted line that says ?Layer 1?? This is the new layer I created after I clicked that ?Create New Layer? icon.

Now you are ready to work on your recipe card. You should have this blank space, sized 4?6? (or whatever size you made it) ready for you to add color, text, or anything else you would like.

Begin creating your card anyway you wish. If you?d like to fill your recipe card with one? color, use your EYE DROPPER TOOL in the Tools Palette to select any color you like. If you aren?t sure what colors to use, there are many online color palette creators available online. You can simple upload a photo of your completed recipe or another photo you like and it will generate colors for you. One site for doing this is Big Huge Labs Color Palette Generator. After it creates the palette for you, you can save it an ASE file which can allow your colors to be easily placed in your SWATCHES palette (usually located on near the right of your Photoshop screen).

I?m creating my recipe card for my Spanish Rice recipe, so using the Color Palette Generator, I uploaded a photo of my Spanish Rice and I was able to have a selections of colors generated for me (the colors it created are shown mostly in the bottom rows of my swatches in the image below). I will then use the EYE DROPPER TOOL to pick (click on) one of the colors from the SWATCHES palette.

After you pick a color you would like to use, you are ready to fill your recipe card with that color. In your Tools Palette, select the PAINT BUCKET TOOL. After doing that, your mouse pointer will turn to a little paint bucket. Just click anywhere on your new recipe card to fill it with the color you chose.

At this point, you can add photos, text, embellishments, clipart, or textures. If you wish to add a photo, open your photo in Photoshop, click on the photo and drag it over to your recipe card. From there, you can resize the photo (go to EDIT ?> FREE TRANSFORM and while holding SHIFT key, click near the corners and drag inward or outward to resize).

If you want an easy way to add the recipe card lines and other details, you can use digital recipe card brushes, such as this set that I?ve created here: ScrapHappy Brushes Midi: Recipe Cards 1. I use these for most of my cards ? you just load them in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and digitally ?stamp? them onto your recipe card. These are one my favorite time-saving thing to use, but they are optional. You don?t have to have lines or the standard recipe card text on your card or you can create your own, if you wish.

When you are ready to add your recipe and other text to your card, select your HORIZONTAL TYPE TOOL in your Tools Palette.

After you select the TYPE TOOL, go to the top of your Photoshop program and you will now see the TYPE TOOL menu bar. From here, you can change the font by clicking the drop down menu and you can also change the font size, as well as do several other things. Pick a font and size that will work for your card. You will also want to select a color to type in and you can do this similar to the same way you chose a color before ? with your TYPE TOOL selected still, go to your SWATCHES and select a color to use.

Click your mouse onto your recipe card where you would like to type the recipe title. Start typing in your recipe title. When you are finish, click once on the type layer in the Layers Palette to have Photoshop accept your text. This will change your text layer name name from something generic like ?Layer 1? to the words you just typed. Repeat with the other areas of your recipe card.

When you are finished with your card, save it as a PSD file for safe keeping ? just in case you need to edit the text later or make other changes. If you plan to print your recipe card or use it on the web anywhere, save it as a JPEG file too.

I hope this inspires you to give digital recipe cards a try. If you have any questions, leave me a comment and I?ll do my best to help.

Supplies used in the recipe cards above are available at Happy To Create.

Please HELP!! Drug testing infants exposed in utero - Adoption.com ...

[quote=UTbrie]This is not entirely true. Drug use, especially if used within the first 3 months of pregnancy are the most dangerous. The reason: The first 3 months are the time period in which the baby's major systems are forming, such as brain, heart, nervous system and organs. Even one time drug use during this time period could be severely detrimental to the fetus. The second to third trimester is less dangerous (though obviously not healthy either), because the fetus is fully formed and just is in the "growing phase". So unfortunately, even early drug use can be very bad for the baby.

I totally agree, I was basing my response on the idea of testing positive at birth and the chance of active withdrawal. I would also find out if mom was placed on methadone when she went to jail as part of a drug program. Our bio took methadone as part of her treatment program but also actively used.

And if mom is using one drug there is a good chance she has used others and/or alcohol. Doesn't make for a good start for little ones.

With the list we have of what bio mom was on with our little one it is a continual amazement that she is here at all...

New cancer treatment triggers cancer cells to produce their own anti ...

We've previously looked at the development of cancer treatments that deliver drugs directly into cancer cells before releasing their chemotherapeutic payload to reduce the damage done to healthy cells. But a new protein "switch" approach developed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University changes the game again by instructing cancer cells to produce their own cancer medication and cause the cancer cells to self-destruct while sparing healthy tissue.

The protein switch strategy would see a doctor administering a "prodrug," which is an inactive form of a cancer-fighting drug that would only be activated when it detects the presence of a cancer marker, triggering the cellular switch to turn the harmless prodrug into a potent form of chemotherapy.

"The switch in effect turns the cancer cell into a factory for producing the anti-cancer drug inside the cancer cell," said Marc Ostermeier, a Johns Hopkins chemical and biomolecular engineering professor in the Whiting School of Engineering, who supervised development of the switch. "The healthy cells will also receive the prodrug and ideally it will remain in its non-toxic form. Our hope is that this strategy will kill more cancer cells while decreasing the unfortunate side effects on healthy cells."

The research team made the cancer-fighting switch by fusing together two different proteins; one that detects a marker that cancer cells produce and another protein extracted from yeast that can turn an inactive prodrug into a cancer-cell killer.

"When the first part of the switch detects cancer, it tells its partner to activate the chemotherapy drug, destroying the cell," Ostermeier explained.

For the technique to work, the switch first needs to get inside the cancer cells. Ostermeier says this can be done in one of two ways; by delivering the switch protein itself into the cells or, alternatively, delivering the switch gene inside the cell where it serves as the blueprint from which the cell's own machinery constructs the protein switch.

Once the switches are in place, the patient would receive the inactive chemotherapy drug, which would then be activated inside the cells where the switch has been flipped on.

"The protein switch concept changes the game by providing a mechanism to target production of the anti-cancer drugs inside cancer cells instead of targeting delivery of the anti-cancer drug to cancer cells," Ostermeier said.

Although the novel cancer-fighting strategy hasn't yet been tested on human patients, the research team has successfully tested the switches on human colon cancer and breast cancer cells in the lab. The next step is animal testing, which is expected to begin within a year.

"This is a radically different tool to attack cancers," said James R. Eshleman, a professor of pathology and oncology in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a co-author of the paper that appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, "but many experiments need to be done before we will be able to use it in patients."

Early Childhood Education Facilities In Universities For Childcare ...

Sunday, September 25th, 2011 | Uncategorized

Early childhood education centers can be found in different areas. With this in mind, parents will find the benefit of finding the best facilities where they can enroll their kids. Facilities can be located in family centers, offices and actual schools. But aside from these, childcare facilities may also be found in universities within the area.

With the help of these facilities, parents have more options in finding the appropriate facilities for their needs. These centers extend services to kids near in universities so they don?t have to go far in the area.

Since these facilities are found in universities, parents are assured that early childhood education experts are working in these facilities. Administrations are composed of people who also graduated in the same college and many of them decided to work in this center to be helpful in the community.

Just like other centers, these university childcare centers also follow a specific set of regulations that aim to give proper education and care for kids. They are near the school where experts are trained so administrators watch everything properly and make sure operations follow the standards. Questions regarding proper childcare within the facility may also be answered with the help of the university. Experts who work in these early childhood education centers can visit the university to help them with studies they need to conduct to provide care.

Facilities continue to acquire new knowledge that will help their operation be effective in educating children. Doing this is somehow impossible without studying since every teaching method must be backed up by research and testing. Related literatures can be obtained within the library and help experts with their research.

Another good thing about these facilities is they usually have many care experts who will look after kids. Many students in college take or complete early childhood education programs. This program requires on the job training so the need to find a facility where they can train and be acquainted with the usual childcare facility setting. They will usually choose these facilities within the university for training and be a good help for more children.

Aside from people around the university, these childcare facilities will also be helpful for professors working in the same academic institution. Professors are also busy and most of them have kids. They can enroll their kids and bring them everyday during their class schedule. Since they are in the same location, professors can leave their kids in the early childhood education facility and then go back home together once classes are done. This is convenient on their end since they can also visit their children from time to time if they?ll not go to work.

Overall, childcare facilities located in these universities can be a good help not only for people within the facilities but also for the community as additional facility options. Experts will also find this helpful in terms of studying and training for their future career as child educators with all the resources near them.

This is the third straight year a University of Utah researcher has received the prestigious honor

(SALT LAKE CITY)University of Utah biochemist Brenda L. Bass, Ph.D., has dedicated her career to following the path less traveled.

That bent hasn't come without risks for the U of U medical school distinguished professor of biochemistry who researches double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), an elusive molecule whose biological roles are still not fully understood. But Bass has made substantial discoveries involving dsRNA in the past 25 years, and the challenge of researching an area wide open for investigation ideally suits her spirit for tackling the unknown.

Her work embodies the creative and successful investigation the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recognizes each year with a select group of scientists who receive one of the most prestigious honors it gives the Director's Pioneer Award. Bass, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is among 13 scientists nationwide to receive the prestigious 2011 award, which comes with $2.5 million in funding or $500,000 annually for five years. As its name suggests, the Pioneer Award is intended to give exceptionally creative and productive scientists the opportunity to pursue high-risk, high-reward research in new areas, with the possibility of making a substantial impact on biomedical or behavioral research.

Bass and the other 2011 recipients proposed research projects that build on their past work while also taking it in new and uninvestigated directions. She will test the idea that long dsRNA, encoded in our genomes, signals environmental changes that trigger pathways associated with inflammation, including stress, immunity, and aging. Discovering this previously unrecognized network of dsRNA signaling molecules would radically alter the treatment and diagnosis of inflammatory-associated disease.

"I'm testing hypotheses that have developed over my whole career," says Bass, who also holds an H.A. and Edna Benning Presidential Endowed Chair in biochemistry. "Nobody knows what long dsRNA does. Lots of things have hinted that it has a much larger role than we know. There's got to be something we don't understand."

Researchers have long known that dsRNA made by viruses signals pathways that activate dsRNA binding proteins (dsRBPs) as part of our immune response, and that this is an important defense against viruses. However, the prevailing wisdom has been that dsRNA signals those pathways only in response to a virus. Bass believes that dsRNA encoded within an animal's own genome, including the human genome, binds dsRBPs to signal environmental and metabolic changes without a virus being present.

Finding out whether and which molecules and genes signal this response in animals without a virus being present will be the thrust of Bass's Pioneer Award research. If her hypothesis proves true, it opens the potential for new drugs to treat the inflammatory component of many diseases.

U biochemistry department co-chairs, Christopher P. Hill, D.Phil, distinguished professor of biochemistry, and Wesley I. Sundquist, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry who also holds an H.A. and Edna Benning Presidential Endowed Chair, said Bass is an ideal choice for the Pioneer Award.

"We are absolutely delighted Brenda has been selected for an NIH Pioneer Award," they said. "Although her proposal to study the roles of dsRNA and dsRBPs in innate immunity is a new direction, Brenda is ideally suited to be a pioneer in this area. She has already made groundbreaking discoveries about the biology of dsRNA, and she has a remarkable history of following interesting science wherever it leads."

Throughout her career, Bass' intuition, creativity, and ability to connect disparate parts of a large puzzle have paid off with discoveries that made substantial impacts on her field. As a graduate student, she studied in the lab of Thomas Cech, Ph.D., a University of Colorado scientist and 1989 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry who discovered ribozymes, RNA molecules that catalyze cellular biochemical reactions. Until Cech's discovery of ribozymes, proteins were the only molecules known to catalyze chemical reactions in cells. Cech gave Bass the task of finding out how ribozymes catalyze biochemical reactions, and she made the important discovery that the process ribozymes use is quite similar to the one protein enzymes use. Her work laid the foundation for research that continues in many labs to this day.

As a post-doctoral fellow in the lab of another internationally regarded researcher, the late Harold Weintraub, Ph.D., of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Bass discovered an entire new class of enzymes, called ADARs, which target dsRNA regions of messenger RNAs (mRNAs). mRNAs carry the information to make proteins, and by changing the information in mRNAs, ADARs contribute to the spectacular diversity required for a functioning nervous system, in particular for learning and memory.

At the University, Bass' lab has continued studies of dsRNA-mediated pathways, with a focus on ADARs and proteins involved in RNA interference. Several years ago, in studies of the nematode worm C. elegans, the lab discovered a dsRNA that responds to food, strongly indicating that dsRNA pathways can be turned on from within cells and not only in response to a virus. This is one of the observations made by her laboratory that set the stage for her upcoming research for the Pioneer Award.

The Pioneer Award was established in 2004 to support exceptional scientists who propose potentially transformative approaches in research to address major biomedical and behavioral issues. This is the third year in a row a U of U scientist has received the award.

In 2009, Ivor J. Benjamin, professor of cardiology, received the award for a novel model to explain the cause of some heart disease. In 2010, Andres Villu Maricq, M.D., Ph.D., received the honor for proposing a new approach to understanding how neural circuits compute, store information, and control behavior.

Bass will formally receive the award on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at a meeting near the NIH headquarters in Bethesda, Md.
