Mexico confirms first measles case in four years (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? Mexican health officials said on Friday that a French baby girl flown into the country had registered the nation's first case of measles in four years, spurring a vaccination drive to contain the disease.

Mexican officials discovered the sick child on Thursday, a nine-month old that had flown in from Paris on July 10, Mexico's Health Minister Jose Cordova told a news conference.

Mexican officials are tracking down people from the same flight, Cordova said. Health workers are offering vaccinations in the Mexico City neighborhood where the child was staying as well the airport and in health clinics across the nation.

Measles is a viral disease affecting mostly children that can cause complications such as pneumonia. Though vaccination has largely eliminated the disease from countries such as the United States and Mexico, health officials are tracking a growing number of cases in Europe.
