Why is the green tea sold in America never Green (as opposed to Japanese green tea)?

I?ve checked yahoo answers as to why the green tea bags you buy and brew at home never make tea that is green in color. People answer with things like ?It?s not supposed to actually be green?.

HOWEVER when I went to Japan last year it was impossible to find anything but green tea that was green in color. Whether sold in the bags or bottled. My Japanese teacher also made green tea at home that was the color green. And from what I remember the green tea I bought in Japan (plain) also had a slightly different flavor.

Why is there a difference in coloration between American sold and Japanese green tea? Does coloration have anything to do with the quality of the product??
Tamara ? most ?Green? tea sold in the US is tan or brown color like plain old black tea.

>Why is there a difference in coloration between American sold and Japanese green tea?

The biggest difference between J. green tea, or sencha and other tea is the preparation method:
?Japanese green tea is first steamed??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sencha

Sugar-free green tea drinking population like the Japanese is a minority in the world. Actually, some J. beverage companies introduce bottled ?sweet? green tea to the emerging Asian market. But ask your teacher if he/she drinks ?sweet? green tea or not. The answer would probably be something like ?sweet? green tea???
And your market in the US reflects the general tea drinking culture in the world. In your country, there are more two major tea drinkers from India and China than in Japan.

So you often find the green tea you drink in your country different from the one you did in Japan.

>Does coloration have anything to do with the quality of the product??
No, I don?t think so as long as tea products meet your local import and quality standards. But taste and flavor differ in each culture.

The bottled green tea market is quite new, just 20 Years Old or so. But it is increasing year by year in Japan. I think people become more health conscious wherever you are, so it may be possible to say that you can enjoy more J. style tea soon.
