Canadian study links texting among students with ?shallowness?
Teens and young adults who frequently text were more concerned about wealth and image, compared with those who did not text as often, according to a Canadian study of more than 2,200 college psychology students. A researcher said young people who texted more than 100 times a day were 30% less likely to feel strongly about the importance of an ethical, principled life than those who texted 50 or fewer times a day. The study was presented at a Society for Personality and Social Psychology meeting. WebMD (03 Feb.)

Education-technology trends to watch in 2012
In this article, academics and instructional technologists reveal five education-technology trends to watch in 2012. Among them are an increase in mobile learning, plus an increase in the number of students learning online. Experts also foresee greater use of social-networking websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, in the classroom, and the adoption of more learning-management systems. Can BYOT programs help bridge the digital divide?
Some say Bring Your Own Technology programs may help bridge the digital divide for students in low-income school districts. Jennifer Roland writes in this blog post about policies, such as one in the Mankato Public School System in Minnesota, allowing students to use their own mobile devices for learning in the classroom, creating more availability for school-owned computers for other students. There are challenges to such arrangements, however, including meshing the use of various devices from new iPad tablet computers to older laptops and the need for increased bandwidth on campus, she writes. Pilot program uses mobile devices to help students learn
A Michigan school district has distributed Droid X2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab devices to students in elementary, middle and high schools, as part of a pilot program to increase students? access to learning. Students are using the devices to access class notes, collaborate with their peers using Google Docs and blog with teachers. ?We?re hoping that allows them to be more engaged in their learning and have more ownership,? said LeeAnn Eyer, Greenville School District?s technology director.
