Remembering 9/11 on 'All-American Muslim'

By Ree Hines

In an emotional episode of TLC's "All-American Muslim," one that was filmed on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a group of Muslim-Americans from Dearborn, Mich., addressed the memories and difficult feelings the day stirred up for them.

For police officer Mike Jaafar, that included the grief he feels when he thinks of the officers who didn't survive the event.

"(Sept. 11) has become a day that becomes not only proactive for law enforcement, but a very thoughtful, special, sad day," Jaafar said with tears in his eyes. "You know, you think about your guys that work for you going into a building and not coming out. That's it. There's nothing else to say."

The penultimate episode of the season also sees Nina Bazzy-Aliahmads express her anger and frustration at what terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden did to the country and, by association, to the Muslim community.

"This is a religion of peace, and the fact that this guy came into the picture and wanted to speak on behalf of all Muslims in the world ? it was terrible," she explained. "It was the worst feeling for a Muslim."

"All-American Muslim" airs Sunday night at 10 p.m. on TLC.

Will you tune in for the episode? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Arabs benefit from Israel

?

Many of you will have read my mini series ?Look what Israel is doing to the Palestinian Arabs [2]? published earlier in the year. To mark the end of 2011, I have prepared this three-part follow-up by including some of the more recent stories that you may have missed if you were tuned too closely to sensationalist media outlets.

Does Israel warrant its accusers? charges that it has a policy of ethnic-cleansing the Palestinian Arabs? Hardly! Israel?s humanitarian work, like that of the organisation ?Save A Child?s Heart?, has surgically eradicated that lie. First, SACH saved Ahmed Hneidik [3], a 9-year-old boy from Khan Younis in Gaza. Born with a congenital heart disease that had already claimed the life of his brother. Another Gaza baby, Odai Al-Kafarna [4] from Beit Hanoun was similarly operated on in July. At any one time, there are dozens of Palestinian Arab children at SACH?s Wolfson Medical Centre. SACH recently opened a new home in Holon to house up to 250 children [5] that undergo surgery. Then in November, SACH ran its first regional conference on paediatrics [6], bringing together 15 Israeli and 22 Palestinian Arab physicians.

Almost half of SACH?s operations are performed on Palestinian Arab children.

Last year Israeli hospitals treated 83,000 Palestinian Arabs. In one example, Abir Abu-Nakira [7] from Rafa in Gaza had a ride on a wheel of fortune. Doctors at Kaplan Medical Center doctors saved the 17 year-old girl?s life after she fell from a malfunctioning Ferris wheel near her home and was critically injured. ?I wish for peace between us and Israel,? Abir said. ?Kaplan physicians saved me.? Then in July, 29-year old Palestinian Arab mother of five Baraa Inhabi [8] was rushed to an Israeli hospital for emergency treatment for an intestinal infection. But the story didn?t end there. Hadassah hospital [9] and the IDF [10] arranged for special TPN equipment to be set-up in Baraa?s home in Qalqilya. They even trained PA doctors on how to continue Baraa?s treatment.

When a kidney became available following the death of a 38 year-old Israeli, Hadassah and Shaare Zedek medical centres co-ordinated through the IDF to transplant it into 14-year old Bethlehem teenager Walid Daadua [11]. In another case, Hadassah surgeon Dr. Carole Pidhorz re-attached the hand of a Palestinian Arab artist whose hand was severed in an accident. Occupational therapists at the hospital provided rehabilitation and now Sa?ad El-Kikh [12] is able to paint again. Then out on the road in October, an IDF patrol provided emergency medical treatment to two Palestinian Arab workers [13] who fell three floors in a PA administered town southwest of Hebron.

Israel doesn?t wait for emergencies in order to provide medical assistance to Palestinian Arabs. In the spirit of a ?shared vision [14]?, The Israeli Research Association for Eye Health and Blindness Prevention (Lirot) brought one hundred Israeli and Palestinian Arab doctors to the Peres Peace Centre in Jaffa for an ophthalmologic convention, the first ever joint medical conference on such a scale.

In yet another example of co-existence, Palestinian Arab and Israeli parents, who have lost children through the conflict, came together to donate blood to each other?s hospitals [15] as part of their activities marking International Peace Day. Meanwhile,Joan and Sandy Weill made a $10 million donation to Haifa?s Rambam hospital. It will help establish a children?s haematology oncology department and support the Israeli-Palestinian Friendship Centre [16].

Finally, consider these two contrasting news stories. In the first, the IDF rescued an Arab mother and daughter [17] who were returning from medical treatment in Israel. Palestinian Arab terrorists fired mortars at them at the Gaza Erez crossing. And just last week we read that Israeli doctors are treating the wife of the mastermind of the Munich massacre. Abu Daoud?s terrorist gang murdered 11 Israeli Olympic athletes in 1972. Today, his wife is being cared for [18] at Tel Aviv?s Assuta Hospital. Her three daughters from Ramallah, Jordan and Syria have even been granted visas to visit her. Are those the actions of a racist state?

Those that accuse Israel of humanitarian crimes against the Palestinian Arabs need to have their heads examined.?
If they come to Israel, I?ll bet we?ll even offer to do that for them!

Portland, Maine, mayor undergoes cancer surgery (AP)

PORTLAND, Maine ? The mayor of Maine's largest city has undergone cancer treatment.

Portland officials say Mayor Michael Brennan had successful surgery last weekend to remove a tumor from his small intestine. The tumor was discovered when Brennan sought treatment for abdominal pain.

Brennan will get additional, non-invasive treatment for lesions found on his liver. He says neither chemotherapy nor radiation is needed.

Brennan was released from the hospital Thursday. He intends to return to City Hall next week on a limited basis.

He says his ordeal made him realize that it is important to ensure that all Maine residents have access to health care. He says nearly one in four does not have health insurance.

Brennan won the election last month. He is first popularly-elected mayor in nearly 90 years.

Winfrey: Dedicated to OWN despite rocky first year (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Oprah Winfrey earned the rare opportunity to convert her media charisma into a monogramed TV channel. Now she's the one tasked with rescuing OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, after a disappointing first year.

It's a high-stakes, potentially ego-shattering challenge that could make the strongest woman or man flinch. But win or lose, Winfrey says she relishes the fight to turn OWN's fortunes around.

"Yes, some mistakes were made. Who hasn't made mistakes? The real beauty is you can say, `I learned from that,'" Winfrey said. "I don't worry about failure. I worry about, `Did I do all I could do?'"

The cable channel, which marks its first year Jan. 1, is trying for a fresh start after executive turnover and missteps that proved OWN lacked a solid foundation on which to build, this despite a Discovery Communications investment of a reported $250 million and counting.

Viewers snubbed the lineup that skimped on programming and, surprisingly, what should have been OWN's unique weapon of choice: Winfrey herself, whose limited on-air presence will be boosted Sunday with a new weekly series, "Oprah's Next Chapter."

OWN has failed to improve on, or in some instances even match, the modest ratings and small audience earned by the low-profile Discovery Health channel it replaced.

"I would absolutely say it is and was not where I want it to be for year one," Winfrey said. "My focus up until (last) May was doing what I do best, which is `The Oprah Winfrey Show,' and giving that my full attention" until its conclusion.

But Winfrey, who said management team errors in planning and execution could serve as a cautionary tale ("I was never interested in writing a book. ... THIS could be a book"), rejects the idea that a single year's performance will determine OWN's ultimate fate. Or hers.

"Somebody was talking to me in that kind of saddened, `How are you?' tone, and I was thinking, `I'm fine,'" said Winfrey, 57, who ruled as the queen of daytime TV until she ended her talk show after 25 years and turned her attention to the channel.

"I realized the reason people have this tone is they're reading all the press (about OWN), so you see me and wonder if I can still walk. ... I am a determined and committed woman. I don't give up. I'm just getting started," she said in a recent interview.

One bonus of being Oprah: She has received pep talks from other media movers and shakers.

"Everybody has told me ? Ted Turner has told me, Barry Diller has told me, Lorne Michaels has told me, David Geffen has told me ? anybody who's ever worked with a channel, who's ever done anything, has said it takes three to five years," she said, adding, "You have to do the work. ... You do not have to pay attention to the criticism."

Year two for OWN will reflect executive changes made last July, when Winfrey expanded her role at the channel by adding the roles of chief executive and chief creative officer to her position as chairman. Discovery Communications COO Peter Liguori had filled in as interim head after OWN CEO Christina Norman was dismissed in the wake of poor ratings.

Although the channel's ownership is split evenly between Discovery and Winfrey's Chicago-based production company, Harpo Inc., it is Discovery's money that's on the line.

With more scheduling consistency, movies, original series with and without Winfrey, and "a lot more Oprah in general," Discovery is "a lot more confident that we're heading in the right direction," said company spokesman David Leavy.

Sheri Salata and Erik Logan, two veteran Harpo executives, were brought on board to share the title of OWN president, with Logan moving from Chicago to OWN's Los Angeles headquarters.

Logan said he clearly understands the hard work in establishing any cable channel, and this one in particular.

"One of the greatest gifts and challenges is to have her name on the door," Logan said of his top boss. "Everything you do garners a high level of scrutiny and attention. ... We don't run from that."

The initially slight programming lineup is being beefed up, most notably with "Oprah's Next Chapter." The weekly series debuts 9 p.m.-11 p.m. EST Sunday with Winfrey's visit to the New Hampshire home of Steven Tyler.

"Next Chapter" turns the once studio-bound Winfrey into a globe-trotting interviewer who drops into the home of a Hasidic Jewish family in New York, George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in California and cook Paula Deen's Georgia estate. There is also a trip with Sean Penn to Haiti, fire-walking with Tony Robbins and a planned India trip with Deepak Chopra.

The injection of Winfrey on-screen, not just in the executive suite, is sorely needed, suggested one industry analyst.

"The biggest mistake they made is, if it's the Oprah Winfrey Network, where's Oprah?" said Bill Carroll of media buying firm Katz Media.

He compared OWN's Winfrey vacuum to programming the Court TV channel without courtroom shows or the Major League Baseball channel without games: "After a while, viewers stop going," Carroll said.

OWN has averaged about 136,000 viewers a day, a drop of 8 percent from what Discovery Health drew in 2010, although it's up slightly in total viewers in prime time and has seen an 8 percent increase among women ages 25 to 54, part of the channel's hoped-for demographic.

Popular shows include "The Judds," which ran for six episodes in April and May; "Our America With Lisa Ling"; and the reality series "Welcome to Sweetie Pie's," which attracted a strong African-American audience (prompting media reports that OWN intended to skew toward black viewers, an assertion that Discovery and Winfrey deny. "It doesn't mean we're going to turn into the `Roots' channel," Winfrey said, wryly.)

Winfrey also is on-air with "Oprah's Lifeclass," which draws on her talk-show archives, and "Oprah's Master Class," a series of high-achiever biography specials. But, she said, she never "was supposed to carry the channel on my back, and it never was supposed to be about me being on the air as much as possible." Instead, O magazine, with Winfrey as monthly cover girl and articles reflecting her better-life philosophy, is the intended model.

She attributes the channel's rough start to a more basic error: The lack of a "library" of programming for the many hours of airtime not filled by original shows, compounded by overconfidence about her market value in general.

"I don't understand what anybody was thinking. You're going on the air, you've got four shows. What do you think you're going to do by Tuesday? Did they think people were going to turn on the channel just because it had my name on it?" she said, sounding almost eager to cast doubt on her drawing power.

"People didn't turn on `The Oprah Winfrey Show' because my name was on it. It was absolutely topic driven every day," she said.

Such modest expressions aside, Winfrey's involvement clearly is key to the channel's success. She's glad to make the commitment, she said. As her longtime boyfriend Stedman Graham told her, she'd be bored silly today if she'd taken any lengthy break after ending her daytime show.

Discovery is also in it for "the long term," said spokesman Leavy, citing the three to five years that other cable channels have needed to develop audience-grabbing hits and firmly establish themselves.

He declined to specify what Discovery has spent so far on the venture, calling media estimates high. But he pointed to long-term advertising contracts with major companies including Procter & Gamble, and hopes of new carriage fees from cable providers that have been airing the channel for free.

Viewership that has been lower than expected, however, has meant "make goods" in ad time for sponsors.

Winfrey, who describes herself as obsessed by ratings for the first time in her career, said she's giving OWN "everything I've got. I've spent more energy doing this than anything I've ever done in my whole life."

With good reason. "I walked in today (to OWN's offices) and felt uplifted to see my name on the door, Oprah Winfrey Network," she said. "Just to ... be able to sit in a room with a team of people presenting you with ideas ? what a gift that is."

It has also made OWN her ultimate responsibility.

"Every third week, someone new was in charge, and now she's in charge. From where I sit, this is going to be her success or her failure," said analyst Carroll.

Winfrey claims to have an unlikely sounding Plan B if the channel falls short.

"If this doesn't work out, I'm going to go into organic farming in Maui. And I'm not kidding."

China: Rotten feed behind toxin in milk

(AP)? BEIJING ? Mildewed feed given to cows caused the high levels of a cancer-causing toxin found in milk from China's biggest dairy company and a smaller one, according to a government safety agency investigating the troubled dairy industry's latest scandal.

An expert review identified the mildewed feed as the cause of the excessive levels of aflatoxin in milk from industry giant Mengniu Dairy Group and the Fujian Changfu Dairy Industry Group, the quality supervision and inspection agency said in a statement posted on its website late Monday.

The agency ordered the dairies to destroy the tainted products, and it advised the public that the contamination will end once the cows stop eating the rotten feed.

Aflatoxin is produced by a fungus that commonly grows on grain and legume crops such as peanuts, soybeans, corn and wheat. The toxin turns up in the milk of animals that eat affected crops.

Though at low doses it is not considered harmful to humans, high doses are linked to cancer, especially in the liver.

Both Mengniu and Changfu have issued public apologies. Mengniu said that the tainted products were produced at a subsidiary in Sichuan province and none had entered the market. Changfu said it recalled the affected products immediately after inspectors told the company.

While once a rarity in the Chinese diet, dairy has become a staple as incomes have risen, and the industry's booming growth has been accompanied by persistent quality issues. In the worst scandal, at least six infants died and 300,000 children were sickened in 2008 from drinking infant formula and milk products made with melamine, an industrial chemical that was being added to watered-down milk to elevate protein levels in quality tests.

Five More Charged with Foreclosure Bid Rigging in California

Four more real estate investors and an auctioneer have been indicted for their roles in an alleged massive California foreclosure auction bid rigging scheme.

Investors Wiley C. Chandler, Andrew B. Katakis, Donald M. Parker and Anthony B. Joachim, and auctioneer W. Theodore Longley are alleged to have conspired to rig bids at San Joaquin County, California foreclosure auctions. Longley is alleged to have aided and abetted the conspirators through his role as auctioneer.? In addition to the felony bid rigging charges, the five face felony mail fraud counts as well.

The indicted individuals allegedly agreed not to bid against each other and other conspiracy members at public foreclosure auctions.? Instead, a designated bidder among the conspiracy members would place a bid.? By prior agreement, these properties were then sold again at a secret auction only open to the conspiracy members, usually at higher prices much closer to the true market value of the properties.? The difference in selling price at the secret auction and the public auction was "profits" for the conspiracy and was split among the conspiracy members.

San Joaquin County has been among the hardest hit counties in the country in the foreclosure crisis.? Stockton, the largest city in the county, was among the first housing markets to crash in the wake of the housing bubble, and had the highest foreclosure rates in the country in some months of 2007 and 2008.? In some months in 2008, foreclosure sales represented over 80% of all home sales in Stockton.? Even with homes recently rebounding modestly from their lows in Stockton, the average home has lost 60% of its value in the last five years.

The co-conspirators allegedly rigged bids from September 2008 until at least October 2009-- driving down prices even faster and further than they would have otherwise fallen, and leeching money from beneficiaries and putting it in their own pockets.?

?The indictment unsealed today alleges that the defendants engaged in conspiracy, deceit, and heavy-handed tactics to take advantage of a depressed housing market,? said U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner in announcing the indictments this week.? ?This indictment follows a lengthy investigation and a series of guilty pleas by other participants in this activity.? But our work is not done. Anticompetitive practices in real estate foreclosure auctions not only harm financial institutions, but drive down home values for other homeowners throughout the region. My office will continue to investigate and prosecute such conduct.?

Eight other individuals have already pleaded guilty to charges in the conspiracy: Anthony B. Ghio, John R. Vanzetti, Theodore B. Hutz, Richard W. Northcutt, Yama Marifat, Gregory L. Jackson, Walter Daniel Olmstead and Robert Rose.? A ninth individual, Kenneth A. Swanger, was charged in the conspiracy in November.

The charges in the case carry maximum sentences of up to 30 years, but such sentences are highly unlikely.? Those who have previously pleaded guilty in the case and have agreed to cooperate with prosecutors have typically been recommended for 18 to 24 month prison sentences and have been ordered to pay restitution and fines.?

Study: Indoor Tanning Linked With Early Onset of Skin Cancer (Time.com)

Given that indoor tanning beds were officially classified as a human carcinogen in 2009 -- up there with cigarettes and asbestos -- it should be fairly obvious that frequent tanning-booth exposure would increase your risk of skin cancer.

Indeed, the evidence linking indoor tanning with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma, one of the more common forms of the disease, is "convincing," according to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer. But the research concerning tanning beds and basal cell carcinoma, the third and most frequent major type of skin cancer -- which accounts for some 80% of all skin cancer cases in the U.S. -- has thus far been inconsistent. (See pictures of a photographer's intimate account of her mother's cancer ordeal.)

Basal cell carcinoma, a slow-growing cancer, has traditionally been a disease of middle age. But it's been appearing with increasing frequency in people under 40, especially in women -- a demographic that also happens to like indoor tanning -- suggesting a link. So researchers at the Yale School of Public Health sought to study the association.

The study included 376 people under 40, who had been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma between 2006 and 2010. They were matched with a control group of 390 dermatology patients who were diagnosed with minor skin conditions like cysts and warts. All participants had skin biopsies, and all were drawn from a Yale University database.

The researchers interviewed each participant about their UV exposure -- both in tanning beds and outdoors. They also asked about their history of sunburns, sunscreen use, family history of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, and their self-reported eye, skin and hair color.

The conclusion: people who had ever used a tanning booth were 69% more likely to develop early-onset basal cell carcinoma than never tanners. Those who used tanning booths more regularly -- for at least six years -- were more than twice a likely to develop basal cell carcinoma, compared with never tanners.

The study found that women were far more devoted than men to indoor tanning, which might help explain why 70% of all early onset basal cell carcinomas occur in females. The authors concluded that about 27% of cases of early onset disease -- including 43% of cases in women -- could be prevented if people simply stopped using tanning booths.

That's a tall order, considering that some 30 million Americans use indoor tanning beds each year. Policy changes, such as the recent California ban on teen tanning, may help, the authors suggest. So would behavioral interventions aimed at women -- at least one study in 2010 found that the best way to get young women to tan less was to warn them about the skin-wrinkling effects of tanning-bed exposure, not the risk of skin cancer.

"Importantly, indoor tanning is a behavior that individuals can change. In conjunction with the findings on melanoma, our results for [basal cell carcinoma] indicate that reducing indoor tanning could translate to a meaningful reduction in the incidence of these two types of skin cancer," said Leah M. Ferrucci, first author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Public Health, in a statement.

Test poised for tight finish as India, Australia share honours on day three

The Boxing Day Test is poised for a razor edge finish after Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey today salvaged an Australian innings that was on the brink of collapse and led their team's fight back against India on day three.

December 28, 2011 - Melbourne

The Boxing Day Test is poised for a razor edge finish after Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey today salvaged an Australian innings that was on the brink of collapse and led their team's fight back against India on day three.

On an extraordinary, 15 wickets fell for 247 runs with India first collapsing as swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus validated his return to the team with career best figures of 5/75, then the Australians followed with a collapse of their own before Ponting and Hussey combined to help return the match to even terms.

Australia has so far made 8/179, having an overall lead of 230 runs, The Age reports.

Hilfenhaus' call back to the Australian Test team was complete when he skittled the Indian batting and helped deliver Australia a vital 51 run first innings lead.

But that was only the first act in an absorbing day's play. Within moments of the Australians confidently beginning its second innings they were once more in peril, sinking to 4/27.

In the event Ponting and Hussey held together for a pugnacious 115 run partnership to ensure that Australia would not be swept aside and would remain fiercely in this test match.

Yuan hits all-time high, on track for over-4 percent gain in '11 (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? The yuan closed up against the dollar on Monday after hitting an all-time high in intraday trading, guided by a stronger mid-point by the People's Bank of China, and looks set for an over-4-percent appreciation for 2011, traders said.

The yuan is expected to remain stable or rise slightly in the last week of the year to close 2011 near 6.30 versus the dollar, in line with market expectations.

The currency is likely to continue to appreciate next year as China continues to post big trade surpluses despite a slowdown in exports and amid pressure from the United States to let the yuan rise to balance bilateral trade, traders said.

But the yuan's appreciation is likely to slow to around 3 percent in 2012, with much of the rise seen in the second half of next year as China may keep the yuan relatively stable in the first half to assess the impact of the euro zone crisis, they said.

"The PBOC has recently set a slew of strong mid-points and pumped dollars into the market via state banks, giving the market a clear signal that the government won't let the yuan depreciate," said a trader at a major Chinese bank in Shanghai.

"But the central bank appears not in a hurry to let the yuan appreciate amid global economic uncertainties resulting from the euro zone debt crisis. So the yuan is likely to move largely sideways in coming months."

Spot yuan closed at 6.3198 against the dollar, up from Friday's close of 6.3364, after hitting an all-time high of 6.3160. Its previous peak was 6.3294 hit on December 16.

The PBOC set the dollar/yuan mid-point at 6.3167 on Monday, stronger than Friday's 6.3209 and near the record-high fixing of 6.3165 on November 4.

FIGHTING SPECULATORS

The yuan has appreciated 4.27 percent so far this year, with most of the gain being recorded in the first 10 months of the year as China tries to rebalance trade and use the currency to help fight high inflation.

While the government has recently halted yuan appreciation amid slowing exports, it also seems to be wary of a weaker yuan that may lead to capital outflows.

Some overseas investors appear to have been shorting the yuan in recent months amid signs that China's growth is slowing under the double weight of a global slowdown and the country's monetary tightening policy in place since October last year.

The PBOC, in addition to using strong mid-points to signal government intentions to keep the yuan stable, has also acted to inject dollars into the market via state-owned banks whenever there are signs that the yuan is set to weaken sharply.

The yuan has thus been effectively kept in a range of 6.3 to 6.4 against the dollar since early November -- a trend traders say they believe to continue well into 2012.

In contrast, offshore benchmark one-year non-deliverable forwards (NDFs) have largely been forecasting a yuan depreciation in a year's time since late September, reversing a general trend of predicting an appreciation since the yuan's revaluation in July 2005.

One-year NDFs fell slightly to 6.3790 on Monday against 6.3810 at the close on Friday, implying that the yuan will depreciate 0.97 percent in 12 months from Modnay's PBOC mid-point, compared with a 1.01 percent fall implied on Friday.

Wendy's goes gourmet in Japan

By Sean O'Neill, Budget Travel

Today, fast-food chain Wendy's, known for its cheap staples of meat bombs, unveiled the Foie Gras Rossini Burger at its new restaurant in Tokyo.?The price is 1280 yen, or nearly $17 at today's exchange rates.

Other surprises in the new "Japan Premium" line-up of burgers include the Avocado Wasabi Burger, the Chili Burger, and the Truffle and Porcini Grilled Chicken Sandwich.

No other Wendy's in the world has foie gras, the liver of a specially fattened goose or duck. The burgers bulge and glisten with oil like sumo wrestlers.

The fancy burgers are sold at a gleaming new store in the Ometsando district of Japan's capital, famed for its fashion shops. The location is a bit away from the main drag though; find it on a map, here.

The store is Wendy's first of 100 planned locations for the country, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The fast-food empire bowed out of Japan a couple of years ago due to falling profits, reports AFP.

The new menu items can be seen on the Japanese website for Wendy's. There's no Baconator Double on it, sadly.

(AP) ? Big changes are coming for the football programs at Missouri and North Carolina. Before they happen, there's one more football game to play.

The Tigers and Tar Heels meet on Monday in the Independence Bowl, and both teams have become quite experienced at juggling questions about their long-term future with the upcoming matchup. Players and coaches are adamant the focus will be squarely on the field.

"We're expecting to play our best game," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. "And we expect North Carolina to play their best game."

Not that there aren't reasons to be distracted. North Carolina (7-5) is in the midst of a coaching change, while Missouri (7-5) is preparing for its move to the Southeastern Conference after an acrimonious exit from the Big 12.

The Tar Heels endured more than their share of turmoil this season under interim head coach Everett Withers, who took over in July after Butch Davis was fired shortly before preseason camp in the shadow of an NCAA investigation.

Withers was a candidate for the full-time job until last week, when North Carolina announced the hiring of Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora. Fedora takes over the program immediately after the bowl game and Withers is headed to Ohio State, where he'll be the defensive coordinator for new coach Urban Meyer.

Withers' time is already divided. He said he spent part of his week making recruiting calls for the Buckeyes before turning his focus back to North Carolina.

He expects his team to handle any extra adversity without issues. The Tar Heels have certainly had plenty of practice.

"This has been an experience for all of us," Withers said. "Each player has done an unbelievable job of holding this together to have the success that we've had the past two years. It's been remarkable. I haven't looked at it as tumultuous. I've looked at it as a life lesson ? a journey ? that you go through."

Coaching stability isn't a problem at Missouri (7-5), where Pinkel is wrapping up his 11th season with a program-record seventh consecutive bowl appearance. Instead, it's the move to the SEC that's the constant topic of conversation.

"There's no question about it ? this is historically a big moment with us playing our last game in the Big 12," Pinkel said. "That's kind of on my shoulders and on our players' shoulders. This game is important for many reasons, but it will be remembered specifically for that reason."

While North Carolina and Missouri share a penchant for off-field issues, they also have similar on-field resumes.

Both are talented teams that have experienced bouts of success and failure. Missouri started the season with a 4-5 record before consecutive wins over Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas earned them the right to go to the Independence Bowl.

Missouri sophomore quarterback James Franklin has thrown for 2,733 yards and 20 touchdowns this season while also rushing for 839 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Tigers' defense has given up just 14 points per game during the recent three-game winning streak.

"It's been kind of an up-and-down year for us, so it'd be nice to end with four (wins) in a row and end our time in the Big 12 the way we want to," receiver T.J. Moe said. "And for the guys who are going to be here next season, it can be a springboard into the SEC."

North Carolina started the season 5-1, but stumbled down the stretch, losing four of the last six to finish with a 3-5 ACC record.

Still, the Tar Heels won their regular-season finale against Duke and have one of the best freshmen running backs in the country in Giovani Bernard.

The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder from Davie, Fla., rebounded from a torn knee ligament last season to become the program's first 1,000-yard rusher since 1997.

"You see the great running backs, and they're with the great teams," Bernard said. "That's the main thing. Dwight Jones has done a great job catching the ball all year and our offensive line has protected me and Bryn (Renner) amazingly this year. The credit goes out to those guys. I'm following the blocks. A little patience helps."

Renner, a sophomore, led the ACC in passing efficiency and has thrown for 2,769 yards, 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Renner said all of the team's adversity has taken a toll, but also made the Tar Heels resilient. Though disappointed Withers won't be around next season to coach the team, he said the Tar Heels are determined to send everyone out a winner.

"This coaching staff ? you can't say enough about the job coach Withers did for us all season," Renner said. "That's really who we're playing for. This staff and this team."

With the aim of closing the Caribbean Sea?s airspace to drug-trafficking flights, the Honduran, Colombian and Guatemalan Air Forces concluded the combined air interdiction exercise ?Honcolgua I.?

From December 16 to 21, combat aircraft from the three countries carried out maneuvers using the runways of Coronel H?ctor Carraccioli Moncada and Coronel Enrique Soto Cano Airbases (Honduras), as well as La Aurora Airbase in Guatemala. As part of the exercise, a Colombian aircraft simulated involvement in illegal activity, crossing the border and flying through the shared space.

Honcolgua I joins other military exercises that Colombia has conducted with Brazil (COLBRA), Peru (PERCOL), the Dominican Republic (CARIBE), and Honduras (HONCOL), which have strengthened airspace monitoring.

These and other exercises aim to improve crew training levels and update established procedures, taking into account the fact that the enemy is constantly modifying his criminal methods.

Ask Dr. H: A blood cancer that can kill quickly

Question: Can you explain acute myelogenous leukemia? Someone we know was recently diagnosed with it, and two weeks later he was dead. What makes it so deadly?

Answer: Acute myelogenous leukemia, or AML, is a cancer of the blood in which immature, abnormal white blood cells grow rapidly and uncontrollably in the bone marrow and interfere with its ability to produce red blood cells, healthy white blood cells, and platelets. It's a fairly rare cancer, with men affected more often than women.

The average age of those diagnosed with AML is 63. AML cell growth is very fast and aggressive, and it is a fatal disease within weeks or months if not diagnosed and treated promptly.

Because AML cell growth crowds out normal blood cells, the disease typically causes anemia and the associated symptoms of fatigue and shortness of breath from a reduction in oxygen-carrying red blood cells; bruising or bleeding from a reduction in platelets (clot cells); and infection from a reduction in normal white blood cells.

The key to survival in AML is early diagnosis, chemotherapy to try to induce remission, and eventual stem-cell transplantation. There are several subtypes of AML, and treatment and prognosis vary among the subtypes. Five-year survival rates vary from 15 percent to 70 percent, and relapse rates vary from 33 percent to 78 percent.

To learn more about AML, check out this link from the American Cancer Society: www.cancer.org/cancer/leukemia-acutemyeloidaml/index.

Attention-deficit drugs and heart-attack risks

Q: After years of having problems with attention and focus, I am starting on Adderall XR for ADD (attention deficit disorder). I'm 43 years old and am wondering if I should be concerned about long-term use of a stimulant and the risk of it causing a heart attack in the future. I do have high cholesterol. What's your opinion?

A: That's been a theoretical concern for several years, prompting the Food and Drug Administration to put a "black box" warning on the package label describing the cardiovascular risks of stimulant drugs used to treat ADD and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in adults. Their concern is that, theoretically, such stimulants could cause constriction of blood vessels in the heart and elsewhere, leading to a potential heart attack in persons at risk and a potential stroke in someone with uncontrolled blood pressure.

The good news is that the results of a large study just published on the Journal of the American Medical Association's website are reassuring in that there does not appear to be any statistically significant increase in heart attacks or strokes in folks who are prescribed amphetamine stimulants to treat ADD/ADHD. Researchers at four large health insurers looked at the medical and pharmacy records of 443,198 folks between 25 and 64, roughly one-third of whom had filled prescriptions for ADD/ADHD medications. The most commonly prescribed drugs were Ritalin and Adderall.

The analysis did not show any evidence that these medications increased the risk of heart attack, sudden cardiac death, or stroke. A similar study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine found no increased risk of cardiovascular events in children and young adults.

While recent findings may prompt the FDA to review the current black box warnings on stimulants, I'd be sure to properly address an underlying high cholesterol or high blood pressure condition. Also, I'd avoid using stimulant drugs in someone who has known cardiovascular disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Soletron targets $60 billion streetwear market (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Soletron, a start-up backed by former Adobe Systems Chief Executive Bruce Chizen, is building an online marketplace for streetwear and sneakers, a market that is worth almost $60 billion by one estimate.

Soletron, run by Shane Robinson and Allen Steigman, raised about $250,000 from angel investors including Chizen in early 2011 and launched its market in November. The company is raising more money in a series A round of venture capital financing early next year and Chizen plans to invest in the business again then.

"Urban wear is a huge niche that no one really pays attention to," Chizen told Reuters. "To become the Etsy of the streetwear market -- that's the whole idea."

Etsy, an online marketplace for handmade and vintage products launched in 2005, now has over 12 million members and saw sales of almost $500 million this year, through November.

Soletron has about 50 streetwear and sneaker designers selling more than 1,200 products so far. Brands include Dunkelvolk, Nooka and Kanvas Kings.

The company collects transaction fees from linking designers and buyers and generates other revenue from advertising and member subscriptions.

Robinson and Steigman have big plans because their target market is potentially huge. There is little official data on this part of the apparel market, but accounting firm Grant Thorton pegged urban apparel sales at $58 billion in 2006.

U.S. teenagers aged 15 to 19 spend $22 billion a year on fashion products, according to estimates by Piper Jaffray. Action sports brands, Wall Street's term for streetwear brands like Volcom, Quiksilver and Hurley, have been the most popular among wealthier teens since late 2008, according surveys conducted by the investment bank.

Volcom was acquired by French luxury giant PPR this year, and Nike owns Hurley.

"This industry is the proverbial sleeping giant of the retail and e-commerce worlds," Robinson said.

Soletron is competing against Karmaloop, an online streetwear retailer that is on course to generate about $130 million in revenue this year. The company, run by Greg Selkoe, has an online marketplace called Kazba, which accounts for about 10 percent of sales.

"There's room for more people doing it," Selkoe said.

"18 to 24 year-olds have spending power of $90 billion in the U.S. and a good 20 percent of that money goes into buying into this type of clothing and sneakers," he added. "Extrapolate globally and that's a massive market."

ASU?Football Inks Junior College Standout Cayou

JONESBORO ? A 2011 All-Jayhawk Conference selection and former standout defensive end at Highland Community College in Kansas, Lawrence Cayou has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Arkansas State football team next season.

The 6-4, 260-pound Cayou will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Red Wolves and, as a mid-term junior college transfer, will be able to practice with the team during its spring camp.

Cayou most recently completed his sophomore season at Highland, recording 42 tackles, a team-high four sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles to earn recognition on the all-conference squad.

Cayou originally signed with Texas Tech before transferring to Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi for his freshman campaign. He recorded 10 tackles and one sack in four games played with the Wolfpack.

The New Orleans, La., native was named Class 4A All-State honorable mention and first team all-district as a senior at McDonogh 35 High School. He posted 17 sacks during his senior campaign and also returned a fumble for a touchdown in the state playoffs.

A three-year letterman at McDonogh, Cayou?s career high school stats included 115 tackles, 20 sacks, three interceptions and three touchdowns.

Arkansas State Falls at Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS ? The Arkansas State men?s basketball team dropped a 70-46 decision to the Billikens of Saint Louis University in the squads? final matchup before the holiday break.

A-State fell to 6-7 while the Billikens improved to 11-1 on the season.

Junior guard Trey Finn led the Red Wolves, scoring all 12 of his points during the second half. Senior forward Malcoln Kirkland was second on the team and the only other A-State player to break double-figures, scoring 10.

Finn also led the Red Wolves with five boards, followed by four from Kirkland. A-State led by two after scoring the first basket of the game, but a three-pointer by Dwayne Evans put the Billikens up, 3-2, and they never trailed the rest of the way. Evans led all players with 18 points in the contest.

The Red Wolves trailed 36-20 at the break. Junior guard Marcus Hooten led ASU at the half with seven, on 3-5 shooting and was 1-2 from three-point range.

Saint Louis steadily built a commanding lead over the Red Wolves taking a 27-point advantage just four minutes into the second half, when Rob Loe hit a three which capped a 9-0 run for the Billikens to start the second period.

Finn scored eight of the Red Wolves first 12 points of the second-half, but A-State would get within 17 just once in the half, when Finn hit his second three of the half, to move ASU within the lead 49-32.

?The key to the game to me was their field goal stat,? said ASU head coach John Brady. ?They are shooting about 49% from the floor as a team and we weren?t able to create any resistance for any length of time to slow them down and get their field goal stat down to the low 40?s for us to have an opportunity to keep the game workable. We only had about 11 turnovers against their team and I thought we missed some shots around the goal and missed some jump shots which we have to make to beat a team this good on the road. They seemed to make every big basket when they needed it and I thought their defense was solid, they?re good.?

The Red Wolves were outrebounded in the game 33-27 but won the battle on the offensive glass 12-11. The Billikens were able to score 43 of its 70 points in the paint while A-State was able to notch 19 down low.

ASU gets a week off before returning home to face Kent State on Dec. 29 and opens conference play at ULM on Dec. 31. Tip off at the Convocation Center against the Golden Flashes is set for 7:35 p.m. Thursday.

Tufts president becomes Cummings Foundation trustee

Cummings Foundation, Inc. announced this week that Tufts University president Anthony P. Monaco has joined its board of trustees.

Founded in 1986, CFI is a private operating foundation funded primarily by Joyce and Bill Cummings of Winchester. The Woburn-based organization has grown to become one of the largest foundations in New England, with more than $900 million in net assets. Among its many charitable endeavors is the McKeown Scholars Program, which has awarded $220,000 in scholarships to outstanding Winchester graduates over the past 15 years, and more than $1.8 million in all participating communities combined.

Joel Swets, executive director of CFI, said, ?Cummings Foundation is delighted that President Monaco has accepted its invitation to become a trustee. A distinguished university leader, and exceptional researcher and teacher, we expect the Foundation will benefit greatly from his advice and counsel.?

A native of Wilmington, Del., Monaco is a distinguished neuroscientist who has focused on the genetic basis of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, specific language impairment, and dyslexia. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in 1981, and his M.D. and Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School.

?I am honored to join the Cummings Foundation Board of Trustees,? said President Monaco.? ?Tufts and the Foundation share a strong partnership, built on shared commitments that include enhancing opportunities for individuals and making a positive impact in our communities. It is a privilege to work with a foundation that focuses on the communities in which it does business and where the majority of its employees live. I am very much looking forward to it.?
