Pepper spray is a tool that many use for self-defense. It is a device that is in the eyes of an attacker in order to burn them to swell and can be sprayed. Music Lessons Are For Everyone | Movies

Music lessons can benefit anyone desiring proficiency on an instrument. Instruction is available for almost any situation, but be sure to pick an instructor that fits the needs of the student. Young or old, an instructor can direct the student?s skills in a positive direction and offer guidance they may not receive on their own. No matter the instrument, there is instruction available in some form, be it the electric guitar, a wind instrument, or voice. Group and sessions are usually offered, and potential students should decide which will benefit them the most.

Children are often first exposed to live instruments and group singing at preschool age. While four and five year-olds are certainly capable of expressing themselves musically, they typically do not benefit from private lessons until they are at least five or six. However, they do tend to thrive in group instruction. Starting a child too soon can result in resentment and a future resistance to learning an instrument. Adults can begin learning at any age so long as they possess the discipline and desire to practice and learn.

Instruments such as the guitar, bass, drums, or piano are usually available through local private instructors or instrument stores. Vocal coaches can typically be contacted via the local choir director or instrument store as well. For band instruments such as wind, brass, or symphonic percussion, it may be necessary to seek instruction through a local public school band director, or university professor. Vocal coaches usually advertise in local colleges as well.

Most public schools offer classes such as band and choir which provide group instruction. Bands typically involve traditional wind, brass, and percussion instruments, and some schools offer jazz ensemble classes where students can learn to play instruments in a smaller group setting. Choirs also provide an environment in which students can learn vocal techniques and group performance. Many schools also make private tutoring available to students.

Some children show interest and proficiency at instruments such as the cello and violin at a young age. Speak with an instructor to determine if the child is ready for private tutelage. Teachers can usually be found via a local school, university, or instrument store. The same it true for instruments such as the viola and bass, though the child?s size can be a determining factor when considering larger instruments.

Most voice coaches prefer that vocal students be at least ten years old. Development issues such as size of the child?s lungs and changes in the vocal chords can largely affect the child?s ability to benefit from instruction at younger ages. Proper breathing techniques are also imperative for successful vocal coaching, and older children are typically more capable of meeting the physical requirements.

Any instrument can be learned privately or with a group. Private lessons usually occur at home or at the teacher?s home. This often proves more convenient in terms of time and scheduling as it allows some flexibility and permits the learner to progress at their own pace. Group instruction has its advantages as well. Peer encouragement and group practice provides a more real life playing or singing environment and takes place in a more traditional learning environment.

Whether you decide on group or private sessions, stringed, band, or electric instruments, there are many options of which to take advantage. Find what works best to achieve your goals and ask informed questions before you start. Music lessons Richmond are a rewarding experience that will help you to master the skill of playing an instrument.

White iPhone 4 coming to Best Buy on Wednesday?

White iPhone in Best Buy inventory
That, friends, is an inventory listing from Best Buy indicating the mythical white iPhone 4 will finally be in stock and for sale this Wednesday, April 27th (just in time to be overshadowed by rumors of the iPhone 5). Of course, we've seen it pop up in inventory systems before, including Best Buy's, only to be let down when the alleged street date came and went without so much as a glossy-white glimmer of hope. But, we've heard straight from Apple's Phil Schiller that it would ship in the spring, and with one already finding its way into the hands of a lucky Londoner a Wednesday release for the paler-than-black iPhone is looking plausible. Still, we're not quite ready to call this one confirmed.

iPhone Tracks Your Every Move, and There?s a Map for That

An unencrypted file stored in iPhones and iPads constantly records a user's location data. An open source application was used to plot the location data from an iPhone belonging to a Wired.com reporter.

Your iPhone or 3G-equipped iPad has been secretly recording your location for the past 10 months.

Wired.com can confirm that fact: The screengrab above shows a map containing drop pins of everywhere yours truly has been in the past year.

Software hackers Peter Warden and Alasdair Allen discovered an unencrypted file inside Apple?s iOS 4 software, storing a long list of locations accompanied with time stamps. The file is labeled ?consolidated.db.?

?Ever since iOS 4 arrived, your device has been storing a long list of locations and time stamps,? Warden and Allen wrote. ?We?re not sure why Apple is gathering this data, but it?s clearly intentional, as the database is being restored across backups, and even device migrations.?

Warden is providing an open source program ?iPhone Tracker? for iPhone and 3G iPad customers to output their?location file into an interactive map, like the one above, so they can see for themselves. All you have to do is plug in your iDevice through USB and run Warden?s application. The software requires OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

The iPhoneTracker application features a sliding bar for users to see where they were in specific times of the year.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for a comment. Apple has not previously disclosed that iPhones and iPads are constantly tracking and storing user location.

The discovery is the latest in a series of alarming incidents that serve as cautionary tales about privacy in the always-connected mobile era.

Recently, German politician and privacy advocate Malte Spitz sued his phone carrier Deutsche Telekom to get every piece of information it had about him. The carrier delivered to him a gigantic file containing 35,000 data points of his location for six months. Later, a German publication plotted Spitz?s data onto an interactive map.

This iPhone and iPad privacy leak is eerily similar, and creepier, considering that Apple has sold over 100 million iPhones and 15 million iPads.

The location data stored inside ?consolidated.db? cannot be accessed by Safari or any apps, said Charlie Miller, a security researcher known for discovering vulnerabilities in the iPhone. However, the data file is sensitive because a thief who gains physical access to an iPhone or iPad could look at the file and see everywhere a customer has been, or a hacker could remotely break in and read the file, Miller said.

It?s not simple for a hacker to remotely access an iPhone to get to that file. But in the past, Miller found an exploit that would allow a hacker to hijack an iPhone just by sending a text message to it containing malicious code. Apple later patched that exploit, but security researchers say there are plenty of vulnerabilities in the wild left unaddressed.

Sharon Nissim, consumer privacy counsel of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, said it is possible Apple is violating the Wireless Communications and Public Safety Act, which allows telecom carriers to provide call information only in emergency situations.

?By asking for permission to collect location data, Apple may be trying to get around its legal obligations, by asking people to give up privacy rights they don?t even know they have,? Nissim said.

She added that a potential privacy concern is that law enforcement would be able to subpoena these types of records from people?s iPhones or iPads.

Los Angeles Kabbalah Centre Under Investigation by IRS

Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images

The Kabbalah Centre, a proponent of Jewish mysticism that attracted Madonna and other celebrities, said Friday that it will cooperate with a government tax investigation.

The nonprofit Los Angeles-based center and one of its charities, Spirituality for Kids, received government subpoenas concerning "tax-related issues," the center said in a statement.

It will cooperate and intends to work closely with the Internal Revenue Service, the statement said.

A federal grand jury in New York also is investigating the center, according to subpoenas cited by the Los Angeles Times.

Madonna chaired the board of Spirituality for Kids and donated more than $600,000 to the cause, according to tax filings cited by the Times. However, subpoenas do not indicate that she personally is under scrutiny, the newspaper said.

However, one of the singer's charities, Raising Malawi, is under grand jury investigation even though it cut ties to the Kabbalah Centre this spring.

"We have tried to provide as much information as we can as quickly as possible to the people who are investigating and are very actively cooperating in every way we can," Trevor Neilson of Global Philanthropy Group, the charity's manager, told the Times.

The Kabbalah Centre has been controlled by the Berg family for more than 40 years. It has grown into an international organization that has drawn celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and Gwyneth Paltrow and may have assets of $260 million.

The federal investigation follows several court actions involving the center's finances. A trustee sorting out a $68 million fraud scheme in a New York bankruptcy court has demanded that the center return $2.9 million it received as an investor.

Heiress Courtenay Geddes filed two lawsuits against the center earlier this year. One claims that the Bergs and others connected to the center defrauded her of about $1.3 million. The other alleges that she contributed $500,000 for a homeschooling program that never was created.

Her attorney argued in February that the center and its related organizations "exist primarily to enrich" the Berg family.

The Kabbalah Centre has called the lawsuits meritless.

The center is run by Chief Executive Karen Berg, 68, with the help of sons Michael Berg, 37, and Yehuda Berg, 38, the Times said. Karen Berg's husband, Philip Berg, 81, became the head rabbi in 1969 but suffered a debilitating stroke in 2004.

Runens Social Running App Will Let You Train With Friends, Strangers

As we all know, long distance runners are lonely. You're out there on your own, feet hitting the pavement, strange birds pecking at your hair as you scramble up and down alien streets at dawn or dusk. It's good to have friends out there. That's the goal of this new iPhone app, called Runens, a goal that, I feel, so far falls short. You set a goal level - 5K, 10K, Ultramarathon - and then "share" your runs with with the app. It ranks you according to miles run and speed and you can have "hood fights" which are battles between neighborhoods. The goal of this app is similar to JoggingBuddy.com' - essentially the socialization of a usually stoic, solitary endeavor - but, obviously, this thing is app-based and is, thus far, a bit barren in the social aspect.

GM Likely To Retake No. 1 Sales Spot From Toyota

Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America, discusses 2012 Chevrolet cars on the floor of the New York International Auto Show on April 20 in New York City.

General Motors is almost certain to claim the title of world's biggest automaker this year, retaking the top spot from Toyota, which has been hurt by production problems since the Japanese earthquake and still can't escape the shadow of major safety recalls.

The No. 1 title, a morale booster for the winner's employees and managers, would cap GM's remarkable comeback from bankruptcy.

GM's sales are up, mainly in China and the U.S, the world's top two markets. Cars are better than in the past, especially small ones.

But even though GM came within 30,000 sales of Toyota last year and began strong in 2011, any sales victory this year has more to do with Toyota's problems.

First, a series of big recalls has ballooned to 14 million vehicles worldwide and damaged Toyota's reputation for reliability. That has spurred loyal buyers to look at other brands.

Second, a March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan curbed Toyota's car production. On Friday, Toyota Motor Corp. said its factories worldwide won't return to full production until November or December. That means buyers across the globe may not be able to get the models they want. Already the crisis has cost the company production of 260,000 vehicles.

Last year, Toyota sold 8.42 million cars and trucks, barely ahead of a resurgent GM, which sold 8.39 million. GM held the No. 1 spot from 1932 until 2008.

Here's why GM is almost a lock to retake the lead this year:

A BETTER GM: General Motors Co. was dysfunctional three years ago, hobbled by enormous debt and a giant bureaucracy. Its quality was suspect, it lost billions, and it had few products other than pickups that buyers found appealing. After a government bailout, a leaner GM emerged from a 2009 bankruptcy with new vehicles and a focus on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. Since then, GM has come up with hits including the Chevrolet Equinox small SUV, the Buick LaCrosse luxury car, and the Chevrolet Cruze compact. Its quality is better. Sales so far this year are up 25 percent in the U.S. and 10 percent in China. The efficient Cruze compact and Chevrolet Volt car both hit the market as U.S. gasoline prices started rising.

TOYOTA TROUBLES: Bad publicity from the recalls, mainly for cars that can accelerate without warning, was hurting Toyota long before the earthquake. The recalls began late in 2009, and came just as GM, Ford, Hyundai and others introduced more competitive cars and trucks. With a bunch of nice alternatives and doubts about quality, customers who dutifully returned to Toyota started considering other brands. Despite rebates and low-interest financing, Toyota was the only major automaker with lower U.S. sales last year. Sales are up 12.5 percent so far in 2011, but only at half the growth of GM.

Toyota is scrambling to keep factories open after the earthquake, and U.S. dealers expect to run out of some models. Already dealers are reporting shortages of the Prius gas-electric hybrid, a high-demand model because of gas prices.

Merle Gothard, general manager of North Park Toyota in San Antonio, says he's not worried about GM retaking the title because it still has a tarnished image from bankruptcy.

"It's important from a marketing standpoint," he says. "But Toyota has other things going for it." He notes that Toyota is still profitable and never took a dime of stimulus money from the government.

THE CHINA FACTOR: Toyota has nowhere near GM's presence in China, now the world's largest auto market. Through March, Toyota sold 208,000 vehicles there, but GM and its joint ventures sold more than three times that number. Growth in China by itself probably would have moved GM ahead of Toyota in worldwide sales. Toyota's lead was only about one day's worth of sales for GM.

CAVEATS: Toyota still has a loyal customer base that believes its cars are safe and will last forever. Many Toyotas run for hundreds of thousands of miles with little more than routine maintenance. It also has a reputation for fuel efficiency, led by the Prius.

GM would have to run into major problems to let No. 1 slip away this year. So far it has not been seriously hurt by parts shortages, but if some key electronic components from Japan can't be made elsewhere, the company could run short of models. A new management team also is pushing to speed up introduction of new models, and that could hurt quality.

If GM takes No. 1 this year, it won't crow much, says Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and insights for TrueCar.com, an auto price tracking website.

"It's because of (factory) capacity restrictions, and that's not something they want to brag about," he says.

Lady Gaga's Stylist Captured 'Swagga' For 'Judas' Video

'Nicola Formichetti is the most brilliant man in fashion,' gushes Gaga's creative director, Laurieann Gibson.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias

Laurieann Gibson

On Thursday, after her "Judas" video premiered, Lady Gaga laughed off any controversy she might receive from the Biblical-themed clip. "In my opinion, the only controversial thing about this video is that I'm wearing Christian Lacroix and Chanel in the same frame," she joked with E! News.

The fashions featured in the "Judas" clip are certainly far from controversial. They are over-the-top, romantic, tough and truly couture. Gaga wears fanciful dresses, biker jackets, crowns, heavy crosses, flowing capes and Victorian-cut silhouettes, as seen in the video's final scene, where she dons a big, white wedding gown.

The designs were all styled by Gaga's longtime friend and Mugler creative director, Nicola Formichetti, who seamlessly combines old-fashioned garb and modern styling for a look that is truly unique to the world in which Gaga's Mary Magdalene character, her two loves (Jesus and Judas) and her apostles live.

The style credits for the video include designers at the top of any fashionista's list. With vintage Christian Lacroix (barroom outfit, wedding dress), Mugler (purple catsuit, gloves), Alexander McQueen (boots) and, yes, even the Haus of Gaga (cape, velvet undergarments), Gaga is really paying homage to the apostles of the fashion bible with her, at times, very literal (there are lots of crosses) take on Biblical fashion.

Laurieann Gibson, who co-directed "Judas" with Gaga, explains that Formichetti perfectly captured the look the two had envisioned for the video.

"Nicola Formichetti is the most brilliant man in fashion and I must tell you I love him and adore him," Gibsonshe told MTV News. "And, my God, the clothing! The idea when we spoke [we told him], 'Nicola, it's a metal gospel.' You know, for me, Nicola is just brilliant at executing what it looks like in the clothing and the swagga to make everyone look so cool, he did a great job."

When the "Born This Way" video dropped earlier this year, Gibson expressed similar warm, fuzzy feelings for one of the most vital members of the Haus of Gaga. "We found Nicola and he just got it. So when we're on set, the Haus is such a collaboration, and Nicola is inspired and loves the passion of the dance," she said. "He is fashion, and him and Gaga together are magic. To see them push and pull, it's just a real process. It's like the Factory. It's very [Andy] Warhol how we operate."

What do you think of the fashions Nicola Formichetti created for Gaga's "Judas" video? Share your opinions in the comments.
